A rare species of blue bee, known for its beauty and the happiness it is said to bring, has been delighting visitors at Chōjū temple in Shiga Prefecture. The Thyreus decorus, or cuckoo bee, is a member of the Apidae family and measures about 1.4 centimetres in length. While it can be found in various parts of Japan, it is considered endangered in some areas.
For the past three years, these enchanting bees have been visiting the temple's field of Sulphur cosmos. They were spotted this year on 6 August and can be observed most often during the cooler morning and evening hours until mid-September. The temple's chief priest, Fujishi Ryodo, expressed joy at the bees' return. He hopes that visitors will encounter them in the flower fields and experience a sense of happiness.
