Random cuteness, or am I way off?

Back with new questions on the translations I'm working on this week...

So I have this journal entry of sorts in which the guy talks about some little thing that he found after thinking he'd lost it. Says it wasn't something he couldn't live without, but it was handy to have around, so he was happy that it turned up again... etc. And here is the part that I'm having trouble with:

正式な名称は知らないのですが私はあると便利君と呼んでます。

I got the "I don't know its official name, but" part, but... 私はあると便利君と呼んでるって...

Is this like... "I call it Handy-to-have-around-kun"? Or is there another reading for 君 that I don't know (besides きみ)? I do know the guy who wrote this is known for having little bursts of cuteness, so I wouldn't be surprised if that's what he's saying here, but... it just seems so random, I had to make sure. If so, then it's just a matter of putting it into English that makes relative sense...

It looks to me like that's exactly what he's saying. Since he doesn't know it's official name, he has to call it something, right? So he calls it what it does, sort of.

There are other formations like this, such as "asshi kun" (mr. legs, meaning a guy that a girl is only friends with because he will drive her around in his car). Yes it does have the extra s (アッシ君). There are a few colloquial pronounciations like this - if you say "kareshi" to mean boyfriend but use standard intonation, you will cause confusion - I think it is more like karesshi. Anyway I think there are some other "kuns" such as those who give girls presents, but I can't remember them.
