Questions about bath

I have a list of terms that are confusing me. I've eliminated sink (room) and toilet (room), so I have them narrowed down to bath and bathing room. My dictionary is defining them all as bath, bathroom, bathtub, so it is not doing me any good

Most of the terms are よく and ふろ:

浴場 (??)
浴室 (??)
風呂 (??)
風呂場 (??)
風呂屋 (public bath house?)

I guess it would be easier if I could differentiate between 浴 and 風呂, and also between 場 and 室 (when it pertains to homes).

浴場 large bath (e.g. public bath in hotel/spa)
浴室 formal word for bath
風呂 bath/bathtub
風呂場 bath
風呂屋 You're right. public bath house or sentou
浴槽/風呂桶 bathtub

バスルーム ALWAYS refers to bath, not bathroom, in Japanese.

The kanji 浴 denotes "immersion" or "exposure," usually with water. In the case of 日光浴 , it means exposure to the sun, i.e., sunbathing.
風呂 is a word of very wide usage used to denote the bathtub, bathroom, bathhouse, etc. This very broad application stems from origin of the word, according to my JJ kanji (kanwa) dictionary, which I will not elaborate here. Just remember that this word is used for many bath-related meanings.

In the case of 室 and 場 , the original meaning of the first kanji is room or chamber--therefore meaning relatively small space. The second one denotes "location" and does not refer to space size and hence can be used to refer to rooms/places of all sizes.

I think you should use 洗面所 for the home "washroom" (room with sink and bath, not toilet) and お風呂 for the bath itself.

洗面所 is literally a place to wash one's face (and hands too).
It is often located next to the bathroom (浴室 or お風呂） but it does not contain any bath tub, just wash basin (sink) where you wash your hands, face, or brush teeth.

Ok, and so the sink itself would be 洗面台?

I was only speaking of the houses I've been in where the room itself (including the bath directly next to the sink) is a 洗面所. The door is referred to as leading into and out of a place called the 洗面所. Otherwise, in what room is the お風呂 considered to be ?

In some hotels or public space like halls, 洗面所 refers to "rest room." But generally it doesn't mean "bath," as undrentide-san wrote.

Right. We could euphemistically call it a washroom in English. Simply encompassing a Japanese style room that may or may not incorporate a bath, but definitely replaces an American sink-toilet combo.

I'm not sure why the terms are confusing you: what are you trying to do with them?

The word for the actual bathtub in Japanese is usually 浴槽, if you need to go to a bath shop and ask them how big the bath is. The bathroom is called お風呂 or お風呂場, but again if you are at the bath shop you might want to use the word 浴室 to specify the room itself. These days the rooms are made as ユニットバス, which is a plastic box a certain number of tatami mat sizes, so you just go to the shop and buy one of these boxes, complete with shower and taps and bathtub, to put into your house.

The room next to the bathroom is usually called 洗面所, but formally (like on an architect's drawing) it is called 脱衣室, "changing room", even though (as far as I know) most Japanese people have a washing machine and a sink there too.

The action of having a bath is usually called お風呂に入る.

rotten boroughs

Another word I like to do with baths is 露天風呂, "open air bath". It always reminds me of "rotten boroughs".

トイレ is generally separated form 浴室 and 脱衣所.

Thanks ! Pictures do help. Imagination does fail....My friends are weird to all still have a washing machine, shower, bath next to the sink in the 洗面所. hehe
