Question about speed hearing

I have been attempting to translate RAW episodes for a bit and have a tough time catching up with the Japanese dialogue sometimes.

Just...how do the Japanese come to understand the Romaji in Japanese animations without having to rewind 50 times like I am?

I am watching and translating episode 53 of Sonic X and have troubles understanding when a character talks WAY too fast.

I've asked this before, but I would like to understand speed talking?

Any suggestions?
 
What do you mean "understanding the romaji". Do you mean understanding roman characters or understanding Japanised English words?
 
What I mean is being able to understand what is being said in an animated Japanese style show when it goes too fast.

Its verbal Japanese dialogue.

And by Romajii, I mean the actual words "verbally said" by the voice actors for the animated show.

I still don't understand. If 'romaji' means 'Roman characters' then what's it got to do with 'actual words said by the voice actors in an animated show'?

Why wouldn't Japanese be able to understand their own language? All languages, English and Japanese included, are spoken at a blinding speed at times, with no problems with comprehension.

You've lost me. 'I study roman words' = you study words from the city of Rome? You study Japanese using only romaji as a means to read?

However I see from your previous posts that you're only really a beginner. I.e. not knowing the word 説明, 考え etc. Not to knock you or anything, but at this level I don't think you should be studying Japanese directly from animation, especially animation with no English subtitles. Maybe get a textbook with a CD with listening questions or something?
 
Is it speaking fast or speaking normally?

When studying a language, normal speech always sounds like it's going by really fast. The more you learn and get used to listening to Japanese, the less "fast" it will seem.
 
The only way you are going to understand it is with practice. And this can take years of living the langauge to even come close to being able to hear all words being said. If you already have a good understanding of the langauge, then you will be able to actually understand what is being said. GL
 

How long and how freqently have you been exposed to the spoken language ?

I know it'll be a challange if you're still in school, but as much as possible try having something Japanese on in the background (Internet, movie, anime (ideally subtitled), music) like 5-10 hours a day for the next 5-6 years, study grammar 2-3 hours a day, and you may begin to understand fluently at the end of that time. Don't give up, though, and I'm sure your dream will be realized, eventually !

At least that's been my experience -- and I had 4 years of grammar, vocab study before even attempting to seriously listen...

Also Janet, thinking about when you listen to English. If a friend says a long sentence to you in English, are you able to repeat back exactly what she said? In most cases no - because you understood intuitively (did I spell that right?). It's the same for the Japanese. They don't listen to every word being said. Just like us, when someone says something to them the sentence naturally registers. What you'll find as you study Japanese more and more is that Japanese will slowly become more intuative. I've been studying for more than 2 years now, and I find that when a Japanese person speaks to me using words I understand, I don't actually think about what they said. I just "happen to understand" through habit and intuition. It will take a long, long time. It's been almost two and a half for me, and I still can't understand stuff like the news, or anime when I listen to it the first time. Hopefully in another 2 years or so that will change!:?
