Hi,

I wanted to get an estimate on the cost of sending large boxes to the US from Japan. No hurry in the shipment so by boat would be fine.

I would be sending boxes of books and clothes mainly.

Time to lighten the load.

A can anyone give a generic estimate?

I think Japan is more based on size than weight. Not sure at all. Just what I have heard. anyway probably fairly expensive if your sending clothes.

Well, it kind of depends, but I just shipped my brother's wedding present the other day, and they weighed it. I don't remember the weight, but they also did check the size. The one box was 14,000 yen to ship. BTW, the box was about as big as a microwave oven, and weighed maybe 20~25 pounds or so.

That's good info Mikawa, thanks!

BTW I heard if you say the contents are books you get a discount.

Oh, what'd you end up getting?

I got two presents. One for each brother. That's kind of a long story, but for one brother I got a miniature replica samurai helmet with a bow and arrows and a katana, and for the other brother I got a miniature replica of Tokugawa Ieyasu's armor. Not cheap, I might add.

I just looked at my receipt from shipping the helmet, and the weight was 9010 grams.

That web site from Hiroyuki is great! Thank you!

Take care you got a STRONG box.. because I heard some bad things about damaged boxes.

I'm still waiting for some things to arrive from Japan that were sent via ship... Japan post said around 3 weeks, local post office said something more like 4-6 weeks... I'm leaving here in a day and I still haven't got it...

Regular mail from Japan seems rather speedy, but my things seem to be taking a world tour.
