Hello:

My name is Allan. I am from Sydney, Australia. I am a big fan of Japan and I travel to Japan on yearly basis.

I am currently building an online forum for Osaka. It is catered towards visitors who visit Osaka / Kansai . However, there is also a section for locals.

The web address is Osaka.com - Your complete guide to Osaka, Japan.

In the future, I will build a website to go along with the forum, but I am currently in the stage of creating a business model / plan before creating the site. In the meantime, I want to build the definitive Osaka forum.

If you are a fan of Japan, planning to visit Osaka / Kansai or just curious about the place, please join our forum. We hope to provide the most up-to-date information about Osaka for you.

The forum will be customized very soon and the background will be an illustration done by a famous Kyoto artist.

thank you

Allan☝

Moved, as not really travel-related. Please post your other requests to our classifieds, this is a discussion forum.

Anyhow, good luck with your forum, Allen! Hats off, you are very courageous to install vB5.

Hi, Thomas, I apologize for posting in the wrong section. It was unintentional and thanks for moving it to correct part.

Re: vB5, is there some issue with this version of vBulletin?

No worries, Allan.

We are currently stuck with vBulletin, we've been using it since 2002. vB4 is still usable, but the venture company that took over has seriously messed things up.

If I started a new forum I'd probably look into Xenforo. We tried to convert this spring, but couldn't proceed due to DB issues. Once these problems are solved, we'll jump the boat, too.

I noticed you've moved your forum to Xenforo. Let me know how it compares to vB5.

Hi, Tom, Xenforo is fast and responsive , I like it.

Some of the dislikes about Xenforo:
1. Some functions are lacking (e.g. setting what are the compulsory fields when registering)
2. Not as many themers on the net as vBulletin (yet)

That is about so far.
I am in the process of localizing the language (to Japanese) for Xenforo. Actually, my gf is helping me with that. (she is Japanese)

Thanks for the heads-up about vB5.... it is extremely laggy.

As I'm a local of Kansai, not Osaka, though, I'm looking forward to your new forum! :D

hi, thanks for your interest. I definitely will do my best to do justice to the name Osaka.com :)

Also, we are not going to limit ourselves to only Osaka discussion. The scope of the forum/site will include the whole of Kansai.

If you are able, please kindly signup and keen a tab on the forum.

The process is slow, but we are moving along with customizing the forum and putting contents over the next few months

I am sure you won't regret your switch to XF. True, it's simpler and blander, but that's also its strength. vB is pretty bloated and based on code over a decade old. We're also working on a Japanese XF localization for our sister site (here), it's a work in progress. As for the theme: just create your own, styling XF is a breeze.

By the way: how did you manage to secure the domain? ;-)

hi, Thomas. Yeah, vB is very bloated, I agree with that. I really regret upgrading my old vB3 license to it ......
However, I still think Xenforo can do with a few new features..... not a huge number, but there are some standards that are common in other softwares such as IPB or VB that are missing in Xenforo. I am sure they will add them on over the years though, as long as they don't compromise the performance.

As for translation work, would you guys be interested in working on this together? As long as what you are translating on is on the vanilla version with no custom phrases.... it would make the progress much faster.

For the domain name.... let's talk about it on Skype :P I added you the other day.

btw, this gentleman is doing the artistic design for Osaka.com ( kobouzu.netツ|ニ築ツーニ停ぎ ) , coder is a different person (American)
