Okinawan Annexation in 1879

I know the Ryukyus used to be a different country which paid tribute to the Chinese emperor and the Japanese Satsuma clan. In 1874, the Chinese were expelled, and the Ryukyu kingdom (under the Later Sho dynasty) became subject a Japanese protectorate. In 1879, it was annexed as "Okinawa-ken" and the monarchy was abolished. Sho Tai's last words to his people was "Life is a treasure." when the Okinawans heard this, they did not begin a guerilla war against the Japanese.

Now, what happened to Sho Tai? Most Okinawan nationalist sources say he was abducted to Tokyo, but Japanese sources give a more moderate side of the story - saying he was exiled to Tokyo. What happened to him, when did he die? Does he have a descendant who can maybe become a regional constitutional prefectural monarch?
 
Arigatou, Nagashima-san! I was actually wondering about the 1879 invasion, not the 1609 initial invasion.

Very interesting, the Sho Family descendantg is the vicepresident of the housing anddevelopment corporation?

It is not known whether house arrest was carried out.
His child is an aristocrat assemblyman.

If Sho Hiroshi could be restored as King of the Ryukyus, it would be good to give the prefecture some autonomy of its own. It has had none of that since 1879, especially between 1941 and 1945 and 1945 to 1972, well, I guess 1941 to 1972.
 

Japan has a Emperor and Sho Hiroshi already passed away. So even if he was alive he or anybody else could never become a king.

Eisuke-san, ah, gomen! I meant that one of the descendants of Sho Tai could become regional monarch of Okinawa. Japan has a national emperor, but I don't think that the restoration of the monarchy of Okinawa would change anything, would it?
 

A regional monarchy within a state monarchy. That is out of
the question, not a option.
 
Not neccessarily. It was not out of the question in many Southeast Asian countries where many regional chiefs or monarchs regained symbolic power until military or communist revolutions in their countries.

Japan is not a South East Asian country.
 
Yes. Japan is an East ASian country.

However - having a symbolic monarch in Okinawa doesn't sound like a revolutionary idea. You seem to be opposing my opinions but you aren't giving a clear cut reason. Why do you not think so?

If tradition is followed.
The Ryukyu king needs to have the China dynasty recognize.

It is required to revive a Chinese emperor.
 
LOL, that's true.

But seriously speaking, when I speak of restoring the Ryukyu kingdom, I am not speaking of Okinawan independence, etc. Okinawa will still be a prefecture administrered from Tokyo with its US bases, etc. However, there can be a Ryukyu monarch who resides in Shuri or Naha who is a symbolic figurehead and has absoleutly no power. Nothing more, nothing less.

I told you already it is not a option. Japan has only one Emperor one monarchy period.
 
LOL, Eisuke - why is it not an option? Why do you feel that way? I just want to know WHY you believe Japan should have only one monarchy. Okinawan monarchy is not a Japanese monarchy.

In principle,
A monarch will be only one in one country.

The Meiji government used the skillful means in annexation of Ryukyu.

I may be interesting when I compare it with extinction of Hawaii dynasty.
 
Nagashima-san, it is exactly like Hawaii. What would be bad if the Hawaiian dyansty was restored? It would be a Hawaiian affair, not a US affair.

In principle yes, in practice not necessarily. An emperor may have several kings as his underlings.

Early stages of Meiji. It was the system.
TENNOU(The Emperor)
HANSYU(A feudal lord)


Step 1: Creation of an international fait accompli
In the incident in which the fishermen of Okinawa were slaughtered in Taiwan, the Meiji government protested against China and dispatched troops to Taiwan.
China made it admitted that Ryukyu was Japan.

Step 2:An organization is changed.
The Ryukyu king is made into the feudal lord of Okinawa.

Step 3:
The HAN(Feudal-lord system) of the Japan whole country is abolished.
As for a feudal lord, not only Ryukyu but Satsuma and Nagato also return land to the Emperor.

Although an anti-Japanese movement happens, it becomes calm, after China is defeated by the Sino-Japanese War.
 
That's true - Nagashima-san.

Except I think you guys still think you're taking my idea of the restoration of the monarchy as a restoration of national sovereignity. Its not. All is happening is the descendant can live in Shuri Castle as a figurehead monarch of Okinawa Prefecture. That's all.
 

I understand your idea. However it is not the Japanese way.
