What days will be holidays for most people for Obon this year?
Week of August 8? Week of August 15? Or maybe a period from mid-week to mid-week?

Apparently, going strictly by calendar it's Sat. 8/13 to Tues. 8/16.

However, Thurs. 8/11 is a national holiday (Yama no Hi) as well, so one could take conceivably take Fri. 8/12 off for a 6-day holiday (or Mon 8/8 to Wed. 8/10 off for a total of 11 days).

Don't most companies encourage taking one week or the other off? What's on your company calendars for this year?
Last year all my colleagues were off the week of Aug 8. I'm not sure what the official company calendar said though.

As far as I know companies do encourage their staff to take off but not necessarily during obon. My wife's company (a big international) and other companies I'm dealing with let them take one-week vacations individually throughout summer. A lot of manufacturers have company vacations but - again - not necessarily during obon.

Maybe it's an automotive thing then. When I worked in Japan I only had calendar holidays off but I was in Finance. Since I've been in the automotive sector, the Japan side of my companies all seemed to take their natsu-yasumi during the same week.

Factory-related companies take a week off in Obon.
The factory will stop the production line and perform machine maintenance.
Sales and clerical staff take one week of paid leave between July and September.
