It feels like i'm missing some elementary knowledge here, but i just can't deduce when to add で after まま. 男は帽子を被ったまま教会に入るものではない。 Should i use 被ったままで instead? Why? Also what is the most generic word for headgear、被り物?

You can use both まま and ままで. The meaning is the same.

帽子 would be the best choice. かぶりもの has another meaning "mask as a costume play goods" nowadays.

Now that's relieving. Thanks Toritoribe!
