Tech New E10 series bullet train to debut in 2030

JR East announced yesterday that it will roll out the new E10 series bullet trains in fiscal 2030. These trains will feature upgrades like more spacious seats and improved Wi-Fi. The E10 trains will gradually replace older models on the Tohoku Shinkansen line, which links Tokyo to northern Japan. They will maintain the current top speed of 320 kph, matching the E5 series.

Each train will have 10 cars, with expanded baggage storage and power outlets available at every seat. In designated teleworking cars, seats will be arranged in two rows with an aisle in between to create more space. Additional Wi-Fi routers will be installed to enhance connectivity.

Regarding safety improvements, dampers will be installed to prevent the train from swaying during earthquakes, helping prevent derailments. The braking distance will be 15% shorter than the E5 series, allowing the train to stop quickly in an emergency. The train's exterior combines two shades of green, representing the mountains of the Tohoku region, and features curves reminiscent of cherry blossom petals, the company said. East Japan Railway, known as JR East, is preparing for an extension of the Hokkaido Shinkansen, which connects the Tohoku line to Sapporo. Further improvements to the trains and track facilities, such as increasing speeds in preparation for the extension, will be considered in the future.

How is this different from other cars? I thought they all had two rows with an aisle in between.

I think it's usually a two-three configuration.

That interior looks great.

We/I usually take the green car, which is 2-2. The seats are plusher, I think more pitch and of course wider, and the floor is carpeted--acoustically nicer. We did try gran class once, but green seems to be enough.
