is there a way to give negative rep points to people who are going way over the top?

You can always report the post with problems by clicking the button just on the side of reputation point button. (The one with ! in a triangle.)

We had to shut negative rep off.

People were abusing it and using it for personal vandettas much more than for good reasons. Better to ignore those you feel are idiots then to try and make them see the light. As Undrentide has said, if it's spam or swearing, or bad personal attacks/flameing, porn, etc. ; just report it and staff will check it out.

You can try this......

go to the person's profile. You will see a thing that says add (so+so) to your ignore list. I think if you do that, you will not see their posts and I think they can not PM you anymore. Not positive, but you can try that.

Be patient and the bad ones go away or get banned eventually, LOL. SOmetimes the "new" bad ones do turn into good ones.
