I'm living in a small town just outside of Nagoya, so everybody here speaks in Nagoya-ben. I also use it because of two reasons: everybody here speaks it, so I pick up phrases. And also because my host family and friends teach me.

Yesterday they were trying to teach me the Nagoya-ben way of saying 'だめ！' but I couldn't tell exactly what it was. Something like 'まあんかん' or 'まあかん' As I said, can't really remember what it was.

Does anybody know? And while I'm at it, is that really what it is? I don't entirely trust the guy in my class that was trying to teach it to me.

In normal Japanese "ikan" is a way of saying "dame" but I'm not sure if that is related to what they are saying. It's "ikanai" but it gets shortened down. They may be shortening some other verb.

Maybe they actually said "まあ、あかん"
Although I don't speak Nagoya-ben,
I think it means よくない or だめ.

When I translate "標準語の日本語" into English, should I always translate it into "normal Japanese"?

I think it would be better to call it "standard Japanese". Although many people do call it or think of it as "normal" Japanese.

By the way, I wrote in the previous post that "I think it means よくない or だめ in standard Japanese.", but not having had the confidence that よくない and だめ are standard Japanese, I deleted "in standard Japanese"

上の英文は、「「よくない」とか「だめ」が標準語かどうか知らなかったんで、消しました。」
と言ったつもりです。

It's all good. I talked to my Japanese teacher and she said it's 'まあかん'. I was a bit afraid of learning the local dialect because I have a friend at home who is from Tokyo and I know he'll laugh every time I say something non-standard Japanese. But now I'm trying to learn as much as I can to piss him off.

Probably not the best motivation, but it gives me something to do.
