here is my rant


music is a culture,a form of art
it is about the way we think,the way we live,
not just about how we dress and talk,and act 'cool'

and i think there are many misunderstandings of those 'music cultures'
for example,Hip Hop,well Hip Hop in America is a culture,but in Asia it is just about packaging, many Asian kids wear Hip Hop clothes but they don't have an idea of what Hip Hop is, but hey,wearing baggy pants,jerseys and caps,and talking in street slangs don't make you a hip hopper

they don't know what is Punk,they think wearing broken clothes,wearing necklaces and dying their hair makes them punkers,but they have no Punk spirit or they don't even know what Punk music sounds like,sorry,groups like Blink 182 are not Punk.

in the mainstream industry,
rock, hip hop are about sex,violence,drugs,and greed,
the medias just show one side of those music,
where are the songs that talks about peace,love,life,politics and things happening around us???
oh,I think most of the artists and bands they show on TV nowadays sucks too,all those negative lyrics, I am not interested in hearing men screaming about their pain or how they score on chicks or showing their bling bling bling.
it is not wise to just listen to what the media gives to you,
you gotta use the internet,go to sites like www.allmusic.com and learn more about different genres of music,and find something you like.

Well, i'm glad you finally found that out...

It's true though. The media is a marketing tool for record-companies. They pay / bribe radio- and clip-stations to play music by certain "popular" artists. It's all empty hype and the general public usually falls for it.

That's why listening to mainstream stations is a waste of time. Especially when you consider what a lot of other music there is to discover out there. Go to IUMA or www.kanaderu.jp for instance where you can legally download a wealth of great music for free. They're just as good as any of the "popular" artists, but they just don't have the well financed marketing engine of the record-companies behind them.

Mind you, i think the music is a culture thing is crap. Music is entertainment. Yes, it's also an art-form, but for the common listener it's meant as entertainment. You either like a track or you don't. There doesn't have to be a deeper meaning to it. That's why i can listen to Japanese music without understanding the lyrics and still enjoy it.

You're absolutely spot on Dream Time!

It gets me so so soooo angry when hip hop in particular is shown as being all about 'bling' and sex and gangsters.... As you say, why is it so difficult to hear songs which are positive? Instead we are force fed an endless stream of wannabe gangsters covered in jewellery and surrounded by half-naked women. Why are the likes of Blackalicious, Mr. Lif, Michael Franti etc etc so ignored? :?

And as you say, clothes have got nothing to do with it. Sure, I wear baggy jeans, but because they're comfortable! Image has nothing to do with the music in my opinion.

About music being a culture or entertainment...I think it's both really. There is a lot of music that has deep meanings for me and I do enjoy music on that level, but I also enjoy music that is just plain entertainment.
