Mitsui Fudosan to redevelop former Tsukiji market site

The Tokyo government owns about 20 hectares of land for the site in Chuo Ward, which has been a vacant lot since the market was relocated to Toyosu in Koto Ward in October 2018. The government will stop accepting bids at the end of August and choose who will redevelop the site next March. A number of major construction companies, such as Taisei and Kajima, will participate in the consortium with Mitsui Fudosan, a leading real estate company. Companies from major auto and media groups are also considering taking part. Soliciting bids for participation in the redevelopment project, the metropolitan government has set conditions such as the capacity for building a hotel that would be an "international exchange hub," an international conference hall and a facility capable of accommodating 10,000 or more visitors. As the bayside area near Tsukiji already has Tokyo Big Sight -- the largest convention center in Japan -- and many other facilities for meetings, conferences and exhibitions, the Tokyo government expects that the redevelopment of the site will produce synergistic effects with them.    • Plans include establishing a transportation base with links to widespread areas, including a boat transport facility, a new subway station, and a facility connected to the Metropolitan Expressway.

The site of Tokyo's famed Tsukiji fish market, a vacant plot since it was demolished a few years back, is to be redeveloped into a bustling waterfront district featuring a 50,000-seat stadium and a cluster of high-rise buildings, along with a life sciences hub. Under a master plan released 22 August by a consortium of contractors, nine buildings will be erected, including a 210-meter-tall skyscraper. The 19-hectare plot owned by the Tokyo metropolitan government was turned into a temporary parking lot for the 2020 Summer Olympics. Consortium officials pledged to preserve any buried cultural artefacts and sort out possible soil pollution problems before embarking on the main construction work in fiscal 2028. The master blueprint envisions a large-scale venue for events and exchanges, collaborating with the Tsukiji Outer Market next door to promote culinary culture, and establishing a base for life sciences that will bring together cutting-edge technologies. The motif of a traditional Japanese fan will be evoked in the design of the indoor stadium's roof to embody hopes for harmony, growth and prosperity, officials said.
