Missing my phone in Japan...

I got so spoiled when I lived in Japan with their awesome cell phone plans and cute, cheap phones. I really miss it. I get back home, and cell phones are relatively cheap, but I guess b/c more people have land lines, it's not as good a deal... like, incoming calls in Japan are free from any network, not just the one you belong to. So, needless to say, I got a little overzealous with my phone and my bill was in the hundreds of dollars! I just can't afford to have a phone anymore, but I can't stand the inconvenience of not having access to one when I'm out. I never have the right amount of change on me or anything! What can I do?? Anyone else lingering here who has returned back home?

i have a jphone at home.. but hehehe i can not use it.. battery is empty, and well.. just cant use it.. but i love them to.. i always played with my girl her phone.. you can remote the Karaoke player with it.. AMAZING heheh

I'm Waiting For One That........

dispenses toilet paper for those times I get caught short in the woods. There's nothing worse then using poison oak leaves to wipe your butt!

The phones are cheap, but the usage gets pricey. In the US, the phones are crap and expensive for the quality, but you can get 1000 minutes between two phones for like $60 a month -- nothing like that in Japan.

A lot of networks are setting things like that up; I've used my cell as my main phone for years, and never had a problem with running over on the minutes. Just make sure to get a plan with enough coverage to suit your needs.

I think US is so much more cheaper in terms of the number of minutes you get each month. Probably explains why Japanese message each other so much.

I think you just need a better cell phone plan. I guess it also depends on how much you want to spend a month, though. If you get a calling card, like OneSuite, you can keep a minimum of $10 on it and then just use it when you need it. Sounds like that might be an option for you. My family used it when I was over there, and now I've taken it over to call my friends back in Japan and Australia. I know what you mean about the "better rates" though. My phone didn't charge me for incoming calls, so as long as other people called me, my bill was low. But if I had to call out, I got in trouble with high bills there too.
