Medication in Japan?

I use an over the counter medication (Mersyndol) which is a painkiller/calmative that contains: 450mg Paracetamol, 9.75mg Codeine phosphate and 5mg doxylamine succinate.

Now I've just found out that that Codeine is illegal to bring into Japan?

Will my medication cause problems? Even if I bring just 1 box (20 tablets) and I declare it?

Yes, Codeine phosphate is considered a narcotic in Japan. However, it is allowed only if Codeine phosphate is under 1% of the total content. Check the product label. If you can't tell, contact a doctor or the manufacturer.

If you find it is prohibited, you will only have to find alternatives available on the market in Japan. If it is very important to you, consult an English-speaking doctor after your arrival.

From personal experience, customs will not bother with just one packet of tablets. Infact, I did not know that codeine was illegal in japan and have taken it through customs many times without knowing - or any problems. Maybe get a note from your doctor explaining that it is perscribed to make you feel at ease. If they get confiscated( which I doubt) just get the Japanese alternative..

I am not saying that you should break the law, but In the times we live in, I suppose a box of mild pain killers is the least of their worries.
