Since Japan is known for very confusingly built train stations, I try to get maps of station layouts.
Unfortunately, the only useful ones I found are by JR Central (jr-central dot co dot jp/eng.nsf/english/maps)
I would be really glad if you could tell me other pages for JR Stations maps. It's also ok if they're only in japanese, as long as you can see the floors and platforms.

If there is a directory of subway/train station lay-out maps, I've yet to see it. Whenever possible, if I am going someplace, I try to find out what is the closest exit number to my destination. The stations have maps on their walls.

The maps are usually far more complicated than what the station is, and outside of the major stations (being Tokyo, Shinjuku, Ueno, Shinagawa, Omiya where I am) its usually not enough platforms to be confusing.

Its far easier to take a deep breath, look at the overhead signs, decide where you want to go, and take it from there.

Layouts of some major JR stations here, in city size order.
Not all are in English. Not covering transfer to subway or other private rail lines either.

Tokyo station
Shinjuku (Tokyo)
Shibuya (Tokyo)
Yokohama (not Shinkansen Shin'yokohama)
Osaka station (not Shinkansen Shin'osaka)
Nagoya
Sapporo
Sannomiya (not Kobe stn. or Shinkansen Shinkobe)

Hakata (Fukuoka)
Kawasaki
Hiroshima
Omiya (Saitama city)

I find maps for the large train stations in Tokyo would make me confused more than help me. There are many signs above and on structural pillars which should help you get to the place you want to go. I did not encounter any problem navigating stations such as Tokyo, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Shinagawa, Ueno, and others by referring to those signs scattered liberally.

1. Click the station on the map
2-A. Click 窶ｰwﾂ構窶愿?ﾋ???愿?ﾂ図 to see the layout of the station
2-B. Click 窶堙娯?堙ｨ窶堋ｩ窶堋ｦﾂ出ﾅ津ｻﾋ???愿?ﾂ図 to see which car (of the train) to change for a certain line. (i.e. if you take the car indicated, you'll be able to get off at the nearest position of the platform for transfer.)

Wikipedia seems to have quite a bit of info on station layouts, and ;ists platforms etc
