In a groundbreaking achievement, Kyoto International High School, a team with deep ties to the Korean community, has won the prestigious Koshien championship, Japan's most followed high school baseball tournament. The victory, secured in a thrilling 10th-inning showdown against Kanto Daiichi High School, marks the first time a team with Korean connections has claimed the coveted title. The tournament, held at the iconic Hanshin Koshien Stadium in Nishinomiya, has captivated audiences in Japan and South Korea, two nations with a shared passion for baseball but a complex history.

In a statement, a South Korean residents organization said the victory "brought together the hearts of all ethnic Korean residents in Japan as one and served as a bridge between South Korea and Japan." The statement from Mindan, or the Korean Residents Union in Japan, pointed out that the game had also received the attention of South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol. The Kyoto International High School was originally set up in 1947 for Japan's Korean population, many of whom were displaced to Japan as forced labor during the 1910-1945 Japanese colonial rule. The school is now recognized by education authorities in both Japan and South Korea. About one-quarter of the students have Korean roots.

Good for them! It's such an honor to even appear at Koshien for high school boys, but to win the championship! Wow.

I knew a couple of ethnic Korean residents of Japan, and honestly, you'd never know if they didn't tell you or unless they regularly go by their Korean name.

Whenever I think of Koreans and Japanese mixing, I think of old history of them fighting. It's so nice and heartwarming to hear that they work together. I thought the old beef was still there. It's nice to know they can put aside old history and win a baseball tournament. And not just any old baseball tournament, but the Koshein tournament!? Damn.
