I've lived in Japan for a year back in 2006/7 and loved it, being christened Makoto by one of my older students.
I had no nihon-go before going out there (it was Nova after all!) but picked up mostly restaurant and pub Japanese. I'm currently learning kanji and picking up as much vocab as possible.
