Travel Japanese Cultural History Museum - Yokohama, Kannai

This museum in Kannai is either free or they let us in for free because of my mothers wheelchair.

In any event, multiple floors of beautiful exhibits and a really nice lady happened to see us and took it upon herself to guide us (in Japanese, I don't know if she speaks English).

She explained that the building itself survived the earthquake in the early 1900s (I don't remember the year) which explains the interesting mix of old and new buildings throughout Yokohama.

Completely worth the trip if one is in Yokohama, only a few blocks from Kannai station.

That's the Kanagawa Prefectural Museum of History, isn't it? A pretty impressive Meiji-era building we visited a few years ago. There was an interesting temporary exhibition on the Japanese perception of foreigners in the early Meiji period.


The abundance of historical museums in Yokohama is confusing. There's also the Yokohama History Museum in Tsuzuki-ku, focusing on prehistoric artefacts, with a Yayoi relics park nearby.

I originally thought the guide was showing us a picture from WW2 but she corrected me. I didn't understand the significance until reading this article. It also explains the sporadic beautiful old buildings one sees around that area of Yokohama, primarily made of not easily burned materials such as brick and stone.
