RickNZ hit the nail on the head. People who work in shelters do the right thing by helping people who are hurting and have no other way to turn. You have an income, access to a computer, internet, a camera, and most likely a phone, not to mention the cards you'd be taking the trip with.

You may not have much, but to intentionally take advantage of a service given to people as a last resort is being a mooch. Services like that aren't there so that people can just throw away their responsibilities and get free food/shelter. They're there for people who legitimately need them, and you definitely don't fall into that category.

If i had had it set up i could have set it up to have 2 or 3 days in japan then back.

But it takes about a day just to get there and one back... so one day of a trip 2 days there one day back 4 days in all...

It works in theory anyways.

All i would need is a place to sleep for one night and like a tube of pringles and a few bottles of water....

I did a "homeless style" trip to new York when i was 13...

No one here can stop you from following through with this weird homeless plan, but we did warn you about a few of the different problems you'll run into. Beyond that, are you even sure that there are shelters like that where you'd be going? Keep in mind, it's a different culture. Their idea of homeless and needy may be very different, and might not be at all like it is where you live.

Just seek work. It's never too late to get a job and start saving up. It's just something we all need to do.

Get rid of the cats. Paying for their food alone takes money. There are plenty of places that will accept them.

I know it's not necessary for a tourist visa, but many others require proof of money that you can live in Japan too, immigration know how much it costs, but assume people who can afford a flight can get by as a tourist financially.

Even ignoring all the other questions. How exactly are you going to pay for the flight? That's step one.

Going to a homeless shelter and asking for food on a tourist visa is only asking for trouble. You could be clever and work there for free while taking a plate for yourself as compensation (I've never worked in a homeless place, although I worked in a evacuation centre when I helped out tsunami victims in 2011 making curry-rice, so don't know how it works/if this is frowned upon in a homeless place), but it seems like your dream of hanging out in Japan taking photos (with what camera?) is actually going to be time spent looking for a place to stay and food. Which isn't fun.

I've read two Japanese books on the homeless situation in Japan. I can't recall mention of anything even remotely resembling a homeless shelter or a soup kitchen. The homeless here are more typically rousted at worst and neglected at best.

I can show you a great many places where the homeless used to pitch shelters of cardboard boxes but where the government has gone through and erected fences and other obstacles for the sole purpose of driving them out.

Could the rest of you please try to keep in mind we're talking about/with a person of diminished mental and social capacity here? I can't imagine how anyone could have failed to pick up on it.

He made that part pretty clear, but he strikes me as the kind of person who blows things a bit out of proportion and thinks he's a "victim". I don't take too kindly to that sort of thing.

Then blame the society that treats him as one and has taught him to act as one and have the expectations of one, not the poor guy who can't help having a reduced capacity to deal with the world around him.

You expect repeatedly calling him a mooch is going to cure his Asperger's?

What I find hilarious is a nineteen year old college kid lecturing anybody on mooching. The dictionary should have a picture of a nineteen year old college kid next to the definition of "mooch".

Haha. Are you implying that a child has any choice but to be a moocher until he or she has come of an age to change that?

Anyways, I currently work as a funeral attendant when I'm not in classes. I also do freelance design whenever I get the chance. I pay for my expenses such as food, phone bill, entertainment, gas (which costs a lot since I drive my brothers to and from school every day in two different cities), car insurance, college, and I pay my family's electric and water bills, along with anything extra I can come by as rent. At the moment, I'm working to save up enough money for a trip to Japan, and slowly building up my savings and credit, but aside from that, I'm trying my best not to be a burden at home.

So far, more of my money has gone towards not being a financial nuisance than Japan since I hope to be a bit more educated and a little fluent in Japanese before I go. I don't take kindly to moochers, and I intend to pay my family back in full for the way they've raised me. So no, I wouldn't consider myself a moocher.

What do you mean? I never said that he can help his condition, or that it isn't a hindrance on his life. I said that he strikes me as the sort of person who wouldn't lose too much sleep over milking the system a bit. After all, he answered almost every suggestion in this thread with "I'm so poor, I have no money, everything I have is for survival", but still sees the immediate importance in taking a nice trip around the world, intentionally planning to live off of others for free, mind you. I have no problem with people because of their conditions, but rather how some of them will use their conditions.

By the way, I'm fully open to taking my remark back -- It's just that I haven't really seen much else from him.

I'll have you know that I have plenty of my own crosses to bear, but I still fought to be employed, educated, and as helpful around my home as I can be. It's not that I consider anything short of that to be sub-par, but I do take issue with people who are fully fit to make something of themselves and choose not to do so.

He wasn't asking about a "nice trip". He has the free points to swing the airfare and he was asking about the possibility of catching a few free meals. Hardly a "nice trip". I don't know how much less nice a trip he could have envisioned than what he asked about.

On any forum there's usually someone who's main enjoyment in life is to go on self-righteous judgemental tirades. They read every post, scanning for anything they could possibly use as an excuse to be offended , and fire up the moral outrage. They look at the world like everyone except them is stupid and/or evil. I guess this makes then feel superior and better about themselves.

I'm trying to tell you that I'm not personally bothered by you. I try to be equally skeptical of every viewpoint so as to keep an open mind, but you seem to take it way overboard. There's nothing wrong with settling down and just agreeing on one topic instead of purposefully creating another argument once the last one dies down for the sole purpose of arguing.

By the way, I'd still like to know why, specifically, you take so much issue with what I said a few posts back.
