japan trip homeless style?

O.k..
i have a debit card with travel rewards..
I have travel rewards that i could buy a round trip to japan and back.
But i would not have any money for food or a room or anything.
Its a debit card not a credit card...
You can't do any credit payments on it at all.
So i was thinking maybe i should just go and do japan like a homeless person?
Is that a thing?
Would it be illegal?
Are there homeless shelters?
Are there Soup kitchens?
I have the points from using my card like a good boy...
But if i don't get out of Maine and into japan..
My soul will weep.

I fail to see the point of making such a trip as a homeless person. If you don't have the money, reconsider even coming here.

Out of sheer curiosity, what is your itinerary?

You strike me as a hilarious person. Every response elicited a laugh out loud.

What you should do is learn to budget your money. It make take a long time, but you need to put small amounts of money away whenever you can so that you'll eventually end up with an account full enough to take a round trip with hotel, food, sight-seeing and any other expenses paid. The fact that you have an online device to type this on and an internet connection must mean you're not THAT dirt broke.

Just don't go through with this weird "homeless" plan. You'll be a burden on the people there, and on top of that, you may wind up in trouble, which is a huge problem when you're abroad. I can assure you that non of us on the forums are rich, but many of us have plans to visit, or have already made good on them. Just be patient.

Laptop was a birth day gift.
Mom my pays for my internet so she can stalk me on Facebook....... Oops...... talk to me on Facebook.
So my point is that i am always in "in the red" i have 740 bucks of bills and only get 710 a month in S.S.D.I.
But the tickets would be free.
I haft to do this somehow or it will never happen.

Don't waste your time. It would be a terrible trip for you and anyone around you. Save your money, plan what interests you about the country so that you can actually consider where it is and how to see it.

Buy a guidebook first.

All I want to know is what you were expecting us to say to you. After all, you sought out advice, and I'd say that we're being pretty encouraging even in spite of how weird this plan is.

Really, though -- Find some way to save your money up. If getting to Japan matters to you that much, then you'll find a way. You can't tell me that you literally spend every single cent you get your hands on for survival.

By the way, what's your motivation to go to Japan? I would assume that anyone who's that dead-set on traveling there would take the whole taboo aspect of the idea into a bit more consideration. If you're even moderately well-read on Japan, you should know as well as any of us that they don't tolerate this sort of thing from foreigners. You may end up being thrown out, or even sent to jail in Japan in the worst-case scenario. Is it the culture? The sites? Women? What's attracting you so strongly?

If you're not trolling, you are very naive. Step outside of your current home (mom's). Close the door behind you. Imagine you cannot go back inside without enough money. You can't eat without money. Can't travel except on foot without money. Practically everything on a sightseeing trip costs money.

If you refuse to accept this reality, you are more than naive (or trolling).

60 books on Japan? Ok, what do you find so fascinating that you want to visit?

But yeah, whether physical or... not physical, that's another reason not to go to Japan from what I can tell. (Yeah, I've never been there and am not knowledgeable, but I can recognize a society that considers disabled people as literal "invalids" when I see one)

I bought a 瓦re:Key from Japan. A key holder made from the rubble after the tsunami and earthquake disaster, rubble which in turn had been collected by people with disorders and handicaps and then recrafted into unique key rings.

Japan is leading in some aspects of autism research these days. Recently a special science group in Japan confirmed a correlation between nerve cell repair functions in the brain and autism.

I wouldn't call it a society which looks down on disabled by definition. I would guess they might have a tendency to despise overweight gaijin with questionable personal hygiene though.

I yield my ignorant and unfounded opinion on this point. Suggestions to the original thread maker still seem to favor the "don't do this" route by a large margin, though.

Well I've never been to Japan, but I can't see this ending any way but disaster. When I think back to when I was young and made dumb zero-budget trips round my own country by bicycle, it was only local knowledge that got me through by finding the cheapest way to do everything. Knowing "what you can get away with" is a big part of it. I can't imagine taking those kinds of risks in a foreign culture.

It wouldn't be more than about two or three days before the cops got called to investigate a suspicious gaijin sleeping somewhere or rummaging through garbage cans in search of food. (Restaurants and convenience stores by and large lock their garbage to prevent homeless people rummaging). They would quickly determine he was on a tourist visa, penniless, without a place to stay, and would very quickly start him on his way back to Maine.

Let us try to remember not to be too harsh with those with problems they can't help having, please.

Really, you shouldn't give up just because getting there in a reasonable manner is going to be inconvenient. You should pursue your interests even when the going gets bad -- Just keep the people around you in mind. No one wants to be stuck in an awkward situation with a homeless person, OR a foreigner, but I'd think especially so with a homeless foreigner!

Living off of other people for free is mooching. Here are a couple definitions:

1.to borrow (a small item or amount) without intending to return or repay it.
2.to get or take without paying or at another's expense; sponge
3.to beg.
4.to steal.

Unless you were being cryptic and secretly meant that you plan on somehow paying back all of the costs for the people caring for you, your plan definitely qualifies as mooching with the first two -- and most popular, I might add -- definitions.

If i was to tell her not to contacted me or get a PFA on her like i did in the fast....
The whole rest of my family would call and e-mail me and call me names...
So it is easier to just spent 2 mins a day to wright her one little email on Facebook.

If you have enough family that you don't want all of them, or at least a big portion of them contacting you at once, then I would think you've got at least a small number of people who can help you with your cat situation. How many cats do you have?

Don't get discouraged -- Most really good things in life are going to take a little effort to achieve. Going to a different country, especially as far away and exotic as Japan, is a pretty big achievement that isn't going to be a walk in the park to save up for. You just have to be willing to accept that.

I will take that as a yes.....

But i don't think it's mooching to use soup kitchens and stuff because the people who work there do not want to be payed back or want anything in return... They do it because it is the right thing to do.

I have 3 cats. moust of my famely is too far away or too old...

Yeah... well... It's hard to achieve a goal when your saving coins and empty cans....

this whole homeless style thing could have worked....

If i had had it set up i could have set it up to have 2 or 3 days in japan then back.

But it takes about a day just to get there and one back... so one day of a trip 2 days there one day back 4 days in all...

It works in theory anyways.

All i would need is a place to sleep for one night and like a tube of pringles and a few bottles of water....

knowing where soup kitchens and shelters are. It not like i was going to dumper dive. I have done that before.

I did a "homeless style" trip to new York when i was 13...

If they were on it by choice, most definitely. Most people will cut you some slack if you're in a situation where you genuinely have no alternative but to be dependent on others, through no fault of your own. But if you *choose* to put yourself in a situation like that, such as going to Japan with no means of support, then you would certainly be "mooching" off the Japanese.

A foreigner like yourself who plans to live like a Japanese homeless person but can't speak, read, or write the language (let alone write his own very well) will only fail in Japan. How do you expect to find any homeless shelter and convince them that you deserve to be there?

Put these plans on hold until you have saved enough money. You are only going to have a miserable time here, probably get arrested or stopped by police, and suffer a lot. (Heck, just getting from the airport to anywhere in the city will cost money, or hadn't you realized that?) This is a wholly ill-planned idea, to put it mildly.
