It is a multigenerational cultural institution.

It is a classic for good family values, no matter how dated it looks.

What kind of anime were you shopping for?

The show is split into three unrelated sections, the theme of each being clearly presented, and the language is very "standard" Japanese with clear diction and an avoidance of slang. In my opinion, it is an excellent learning resource for beginning and intermediate students, as well as just being a well-produced and entertaining show which has been loved by millions for decades. I doubt you could find anybody in Japan who isn't familiar with it.

If you have access to the original four panel comics (by Machiko Hasegawa), those are excellent as well, although extremely dated now.

Unfortunately, foreign learners tend to have zero interest in that style comic or anime.

I think it's good if you like those everyday simple stories, sometimes with a moral teaching behind it. If you like epic adventure or action kind, sazae is not for you.
