Yo,

I can't find it anywhere on the net because it is a big phrase, but I am trying to say 'What is 'word' in English?'

The reason is because I have just got a Skype buddy that speaks Japanese and English, and I am using this to improve speaking and listening skills. However, if he says a word I don't understand, I need to ask him what it means.

So it is
What is (this) 'word' in English?
Obviously 'word' is replaced with a noun.

My first guess was
'word' wa nan de eigo desu ka, but that sounds wrong...

Thanks for the help!

Good try. Please note that word order is different in English and in Japanese.

What is ~ in English?
~ wa engo de nan desuka?

ありがとうございます!
That was a quick reply!

So, if I wanted to say: What is 'sakana' in english, I would say:
魚は英語で何ですか。
Is that right?

Thanks undrentide!

Yes, you got it right!

Alternatively, you can also say
英語で魚は何ですか。

It may be slightly clearer if you want to ask "How do you say XXX in English?"

***(これ)を英語で何と言いますか?or 英語でこれをなんというか?

Hi elizabeth. In the first statement you gave, is 何 read as 「なん」 or 「なに」?
Thanks for the help!
