Tearless onions
Onions that do not cause tears when cut are now being grown in Hokkaido. In Japanese, they are called 涙が出ないタマネギ (namida ga denai tamanegi). The variety also lacks the usual sharpness when eaten raw and can be used in salads without soaking in water. A major Tokyo-based food company developed the onion while studying ways to prevent discolouration during processing. The crop has gradually spread among growers in Hokkaido. Since its launch in 2015, the onion has gained popularity. Production is expected to reach about 1,000 tonnes by 2029, more than five times the current sales volume.
