Here's the thing that people outside of the United States will never understand about hippies... basically there was nothing ever honorable about being a hippie.
If you think that the primary drive amongst hippies was peace and love, you're wrong, it was more close to a highly developed sense of personal gratification, rather than any sense of altruism that was claimed. People were mainly attracted to the hippie lifestyle by all the drugs and sex that was going on in Haight Ashbury, and followed that---
The idea of peace was not even secondary, and I'd contend that almost anyone would sit around and chant for peace and try to levitate the pentagon if they were high enough.
Oddly enough the same man Herb Caen, who wrote for the
Chronicle, coined the term hippie, a sort of contraction of hipster, or hip, as did the terms beatnik & yuppie...
What happened was that like the beatnik movement, the masses of people who claimed to be hippies were doing so well after the movement had already died out and then taken on another form.
What happened to the hippies? They became the boomer generation that probably put the United States into one of the biggest economic funks in history. They created
marketing one of the biggest bull--- occupations in history, they took houses that they bought for $20,000 and made sure their children would have to spend $200,000 to purchase a similar home, they are the generation that invented the
mid-life crisis, they assured future generations that the educational degrees they received wouldn't be worth the paper they were printed on, unlike their parents before them who had to work very hard and build equity, they prefered to work as little as possible, for as much ill gotten gain as possible, at the expense of anyone around them... (see the 80's...)... Remember, all of this came from
hippies.
Before we bust out the .50 caliber rifles and start shooting people from a mile away it's important to know exactly who we're talking about. Your parents, the baby boomers, are between 40 and 60 years old. They "stopped a war." They "can't remember the 60s" and they ruined everything for every generation to come. Though their politics were knee-jerk liberal 25 years ago, today they combine the worst of both parties. They pretend to be Democrats but secretly vote Republican at the last second so they don't have to pay taxes on the incredible amount of income they've accrued doing nothing. Almost everything bad about today can be traced back to them. The lack of honesty in the media is from their old hippie propaganda. The incredible debt we've been burdened with is from their overspending.
[1] When you talk about hippies in the United States, you're really talking about what are now the boomers...
The
Yippies, Abbie Hoffman, now they were interesting... No pretentions about peace & love, just good old fashioned sabotage.
I would say hippies in the United States, their place of origin are much more openly dispised than outside.
Commonly overheard phrase in the US:
"Ugghh, hippies..."
