I"m a musician too - I've played viola since I was 12 (22 years). Sometimes I loose count of how long it's been and get the number wrong.. but this time, its' correct.
I play by ear and read music as well. I have taught basic music theory in the past.
I also love to write music, and am very very picky of what artists I listen to, cause that's just who I am.
The first Japaense JPop artist I ever truly heard was Mika Nakashima; I found (by accident) her music video for Hi no Tori ("Phoenix", also titled "Hitori Ja Nai" which means "You are Not Alone") one day on YouTube.
I was head-over-heals for her singing and the language she was singing in (which I at first thought was Korean (!!!) ) and learned that she was in fact Japanese. I truly wanted to learn what words she was saying in the song; thus begun my journey to learn Japaense.
Funny, eh? But I've been hooked on the language since, which has opened my mind to learning more about the culture and the food (*So* yummy!)
Anyhow, yoroshiku onegai shimasu,
