Hi, I am having trouble with the search function. It's probably user error! I tried to search for Northwest Airlines because I remembered that someone posted they were terrible to fly, especially to Japan. I tried so many times and with every phrase and word and I couldn't get anything. Either it was a too common word or no results. I am sure I read about that airline on this site! Then I tried to find the post a picture of your pet thread and typed in that phrase and no luck. It couldn't find a thing except some other picture threads. What am I doing wrong? I want to read the post on Northwest and I want to post a picture of my puppy! I am sure it is something I am doing or not doing! Thanks in advance!

The search function has long been notorious for being almost completely useless.

Take small comfort in knowing that the problem isn't you.

Is this the thread you're looking for regarding Northwest?
Best Airline To Japan?

I'll keep looking for the other one, too...

Sorry, I couldn't find the thread about pet pictures...

I hope the other one was of use to you, though!

You can also try Google's site search. It sometimes comes up with better results than vBulletin. Just add "site:jref.com" to your normal google search as in:

best airline site:jref.com

Hope, this helps

Thanks!! Yep the airline one was it! I am glad to know it's not just me with search troubles. I'll give google a try. You know, I swear that search worked better a little while back. I was able to find so much more and now I can barely get anything found. I end up paging through each part of the forum seperately. I do find some fun stuff that way, but the search function would be a lot less time consuming.

I couldn't find the post your pet's picture, so I changed my avatar.

Very cute avatar, indeed. I would like to know more about him/her. Do you have a story, please?

A story...always...
I was planning on getting a puppy on our upcoming trip to Japan. Well, as it turned out we were up north at our summer house and ran into a labrador breeder. I told him that I wanted a big, kind male puppy and color wasn't a consideration. He had a few males and we took a look. This guy came right on over and fell asleep in my arms and that was it, I was hooked. His name is Fin, short for "Huck Fin's Summertime Fun". He seems smart and cries at any door to let you know he has to go outside and do his business. I could go on and on about him. I am very sleepy though, he didn't fall asleep until after midnight and was up at 4:30am. I think we have to change that schedule! I run and run and run with him, but darn I forgot just how much energy a puppy has. Oh, the breeder is going to board him while we are in Japan, which is so great for us. I won't have to worry too much about him. He will get to go swimming and hunting. His breeder also trains hunting dogs, not that I will ever hunt, but it is good fun for Fin who adores water and retrieving.
I am in puppy love.

It hasn't worked the last few times I've tried either if that's a small comfort. Either results are null when I know there is something there or it comes back with 500 completely unrelated threads displayed in annoyingly non-linear (ie fully random) order.

That's it exactly Elizabeth! It gets annoying. Then I get annoyed with my self because I try for 20 more minutes when I could have just searched the individual part of the forum that I know the thread to be located in!

Hehe, guess it's a lucky thing I'm not tempted quite that far....the stuff I'm looking for is mostly in Japanese (unsearchable anyway) and goes back 2-3 years. I'm lucky if I remember one or two English terms I might have used. What subsection to start plugging through is a hopeless fantasy, even presuming I had the time or patience...

Google is a good idea, though, of course if you have a more specific keyword than Northwest Airlines, travel, etc. Try it with the person's username if that is a part that is known.

Right dont know if anyone has given you the link yet Goldengirl, but if they havent here it is, its in Community forum under Post your Pets Picture.

Went through list of all my posts til I found it lol.

Hope that helps

Was spelling "Huck Finn" with just one "n" a conscious decision?

I'm assuming the search function may have gotten screwed up during the upgrade.

Once again, will an admin or mod please acknowledge this support request !!

Whether it can be corrected or not is now somewhat beside the point. All I (and presumably Goldiegirl) want assurance of is that someone has actually seen this thread and cares about the user issues on their site.

Doumo arigatou.

This has been a problem for a long time, and I know that the other admins are doing their best to fix things like this.

Does anyone ever come to another Vbulletin and have problems searching there as well? So that we know if the problem is Jref, or the Vbulletin Search function itself.

I'll look into it a little bit more myself on the Vbulletin website itself.

This isn't about general clunkiness or lack of power and searchability. Those have been around for a long time.

Complete nonusability or coming back with no results on known terms is the "breakdown" that I'm experiencing lately and I think what Goldiegirl was also describing in her example.

Forum Search Function

If you refer to the forum's search function I assume you talk about this form

=> https://jref.com/forum/search.php

That's the advanced search page, accessible through the the text link on top of each forum page. The search form in the header is based on Google's search function and should index JREF's content globally. Yes, "should".

Right now, I am rebuilding the forum's search index, a process that will probably take another three hours. Once concluded I hope that search results will be more accurate.

Thanks for your patience.
