help me please!

Leaving for Japan at the end of May and have been putting off dealing with shippers till recently. Also considering sending some of my stuff by mail but now I am hearing that I have to pay dutie fees on everything over $2,000 in value. Is this true? if so is there any way around it or am I just royaly screwed?

Any help would be gretly appreciated. Thanks!

I think the $2,000 value limit is only on new merchandise purchased outside Japan (as souvenir, gift, etc.). I think you don't have to pay for anything that is used and obviously for personal use. When you ship, you have to enter information on the packages that they are UNACCOMPANIED BAGGAGE consisting of personal belongings. You must also declare at airport customs when you arrive in Japan that you have unaccompanied baggage. Otherwise, you will be charged customs duties when the packages arrive.

Additional note: Never trust the postal service for your things to arrive safely. Many of my son's friends who studied in the US found things missing when the packages arrived in Japan. (I don't like pointing fingers, but it seems to happen in the US segment of the shipping process. )

Don't ever send valuables and things you don't want to lose by mail.
