I'm Lane and live in Arkansas. I just recently got interested in Japan but am now very interested. I am most interested in traditional culture but would like to experience both it and modern culture. I am a senior in high school and will be enlisting in the Army at the end of the summer and will DEP my senior year. I am going to try to go to Japan next summer before I ship out for OSUT. Thanks.

Hi Lane !!

Welcome to JREF!! Nice to see some Americans are still interested in guns & shooting; seems to be the "IN" thing now days to hate firearms. Have you checked into getting an Army duty station in Japan? In some military schools, the tops 1 or 2 in the class can choose their duty station. I got to spend 2 years stationed in Japan(Navy) for being second in my communications class. Check with your Army recruiter on ways to end up in Japan and have the Army pay for it.

From a way over yonder way, here, in the Japan Alps...I extend my greetings and shout out a big 'WELCOME' to the forum. I hope your plans go well enough that you can make it over here, and have a stay here. In that way you can really learn about both aspects of Japan--the old AND the new !!

Drop in and visit us anytime, cashhighlander san, and share and learn with all of us !! See you 'round !!

Good Luck joining. the military is nice its how im spending 4 years in japan. I wouldtn go to the recuiter he has no say in the world as to where you will be stationed. If your set on going when you go to MEPS is the time for them to plan where you will be station days before going to training. You will most likly find out where you are going after you complete Basic Training. Whatever they have told you now is total BS and means nothing tell you sign your name at MEPS even so the paper is not legal until you step your first foot on Military Basic Training Grounds.

Cheers and Welcome,

Good information here for you guy, if you can let the military foot the bill. Hell you could get stationed as close as Korea too.

There are a few US Army bases here in Okinawa as well.
