Hard Drive Crash!

My hard drive suddenly crashed on me last week and I was unable to recover any of my files without sending it out and paying a minimum of $500 to hopefully recover any retrievable files. Luckily I always back up my important work and pictures and such and only lost about 3 weeks work. This should be a reminder for all to remember to back up anything you don't want to lose!

Anyway I bought a new drive, installed XP and everything and all seems to be going well with the exception of IE. I am unable to view websites, including Jref in their original format. I can read what is on them, but all I get is a white background and the sites do not fit in the screen as they are much smaller. For example I use a lavender screen when on Jref, but I am unable to use it as all I get is a white background. I can see pics and color and such, but it is so drab and small and not at all like the original sites. Also, the icons are too small and the type is too big in some cases. I have played around with IE settings and XP display settings, but I cannot see the websites in their original format.

If anyone can please help me with this I would be most grateful.

You should always keep a back up HD, and copy new data to it at least once a month incase that happens.

I know where you're coming from Pachipro; same thing happened to me some time ago. Distressing isn't it?

However, as for your IE problem ....

Why, in heaven's name, are you using IE .... ?!!!!

Move to Firefox, or Opera or something!

Get another browser that doesn't actually invite problems!

I agree. My IE starts up only for Windows Update. I know that IE is required for some software and for some corporate networks, but avoid it like the plague for personal use!!

I use both Firefox and Opera. But, I view this forum with Opera because it is easier to view than Firefox on zoom mode.

It sounds to me, that over the course of time, you've probably installed some specialized little applications or application viewers. Either that or you've been running IE minus a few updates. Of course, I could be (and have before) been wrong. Sorry, I can't be of more help.

Well at least I got color back. However web sites are still smaller and do not fill the entire screen. Maybe a little more tweeking will help solve the problem.

I do and I did. That's why I was fortunate to lose only the last few weeks work.

Of course Firefox has problems, too. But the solutions are (usually) provided much quicker than for IE. That's not the main reason, though (security is your own responsibility, IMO). Firefox is more adaptable to your needs & environment. There are numerous plugins & extensions which can make your life easier. Take Greasemonkey, for example, which lets you view any website in a fashion that you like (& has many more opportunities).

Only if you used a Ubunutu-Linux distribution I wouldn't really recommend Firefox.

Agreed absolutely.

Of course, as a browser achieves popularity it will become, more and more, a target for hackers. This is inevitable.

But one of the chief reasons that Mozilla based browsers are safer is that they do not recognise "Activex" cotrolled elements - which only exist in IE. Unfortunately for IE users, "activex" allows an absolute world of malicious scripts to be installed on your PC and run God knows what on your machine.

And as Bossel states, using Firefox (or Opera) quickly becomes a sheer delight to use after IE! You haven't lived if you haven't tried using "tabbed browsing"!

And it's free!

Go for it! You don't have to give up IE (I have about six browsers to choose from - great for lurking!)

Thanks for all your replies and I think I will download and try firefox. As far as security is concerned I am always completely protected and download all updates as soon as they become available and have never been infected. The hard drive just crashed.

Anyway, I found that the problem was in my monitor. It was set to it's highest resolution of 1280 x 1024. When I lowered it, I can now view web pages that fill the entire screen. It says that with a higher resolution you are able to see more info, but that info decreases in size.

What size monitor do you have Pachipro?

I run a 19" CRT on 1280 x 1024 all the time. No problems.

I have a 17" LCD monitor. I have no problems with it. I have an astigmatism and the larger type with a lower resolution allows me to read more clearly with my reading glasses on. I didn't realize that my monitor was set at that lower resolution. When I reinstalled all the OS software it reverted to it's default settings.

Everything is now back to where it was before the HD crash.
