I was just wondering if the japanese use their first or their last names on their hanko. Because it seems odd to have a one-of-a-kind with a first name, and a last name couldnt be orginal. How does this work, I'm probably missing something, and thats why I am here.

I had one made for me that was just my last name in Katakana. Not entirely sure on what's considered proper but generally speaking I think it's usually used with last names since it's used on official documents. The link below has some nice examples.
