I was just wondering on how everybody celebrated Golden Week.

Haha. I haven't even notice any "golden week"myself. we have a "long weekend" in may (1st may - the day of work, 3rd - constitution day) this year it was from 30th april to 3rd may. Since I have lectures from wednesday till friday, it was a normal weekend for me. Meeting friends etc.

Golden Week is a week to 10 days long holidays they have in Japan, which starts on April 29 th and ends on May 5 th or Sunday of the week. Most schools are closed, so are a lot of workplaces.
The national holidays making up the Golden Week are:

April 29
Greenery Day (Midori no hi):
April 29 used to be the birthday of Emperor Showa, who died in the year 1989. After his death, the day was changed into a national holiday for environment and nature, since the emperor loved plants and nature. From 2007, this national holiday will be renamed Showa Day, while Greenery Day will be moved to May 4.

May 3
Constitution Day (Kenpo kinenbi):
On this day in 1947, the new post war constitution was put into effect.

May 4
"Between Day" (Kokumin no kyujitsu):
According to Japanese law, a day which falls between two national holidays is also declared a national holiday, unless the "between day" is a Sunday, in which case it will be just a regular Sunday. From 2007, Greenery Day, currently celebrated on April 29, will be moved to May 4.

May 5
Children's Day (Kodomo no hi):
The Boy's Festival (Tango no Sekku) is celebrated on this day. Families pray for the health and future success of their sons by hanging up carp streamers and displaying samurai dolls, both symbolizing strength, power and success in life. The Girl's Festival, by the way, is celebrated on March 3.

misa...one note on that. The schools are not closed all week. My kids went to school on Monday and Friday of Golden week

I was accompanied by parents and went to Izumo Shrine.
It took about 5 hours by car.
(From Fukuoka to Shimane)
We looked at KAGURA.
It stayed at ONSEN of the northern part of Hiroshima Prefecture on that day.
On the next day, it went to Nagato-Yumoto of Yamaguchi Prefecture. We took the pleasure boat and looked at the scenic spot of an OOMI island.

Distance is 900km.
I was tired very much.

on wednesday i went to the sagami oodako matsuri
basically a giant kite festival it was cooland after that i looked at the koinobori over the sagami river
that was on the 4th and in the evening i watched the baystars kick giant butt in tokyo dome
800 yen for a beer ...are you kiddng me

the following day i went to odawara wher there happened to be another local festival
the matsubara jinja festival
it was fun and i visited odawara castle
japanese castles arent very big but they are pretty
later i sopped at kouzu to go bowling
there is a bowling centre in which on lane has 300 pins
i could only knock down 250

ill post some photos on my site a little later and put the links here

Oh my, I am guessing you're the one who drove the car Hiroyuki san. Although I think having seen the scenic spots and being at the Onsen would be worth it.

Um, I see. So there are many festivals going on throughout the Golden Week. And I thought the only events were what misa.j mentioned.

Visited Shimokamo Shrine in Kyoto, Ishiyama Temple by Lake Biwa (West side) and Hikone Castle on the East side of Lake Biwa.

I worked, worked, worked... yeah, that about sums up my GW. I did take one day off though to catch the 窶堙??堙ｱ窶堋ｽ窶堋ｭ festival in Hakata. I read somewhere it's one of the most attended festivals in all of Japan and there was certainly no shortage of people when I was there, heh.

Pardon my ignorance, but how does a typical Japanese festival proceed ? Do you have to go on parade ? Does everyone have to partake some of the same food ?

But I am only so educated in the language of Japanese...
I'm a yabanjin stuck in his ways... With a J-wife that is more interested in English than teaching her husband Japanese... sigh...

Must move to Japan to be immersed in the language...
