Give me a boost please!

African American male, mild of nature. Studing the Japanese language for a year and a half. I'm seriously considering moving to Japan. My desire is to, after finishing my Japanese training, start attending classes at Waseda in education. But I am afraid to leave. I need a confidence boost as to why I should go, and if I'm making the wrong decision by leaving everyone I know behind in America. I love every minute of my class and wish it wouldn't end. I've seen alot of Documentaries and read plenty of books about life in Japan. I just need a little nudge twards this huge step in my life. Please.

Well, nothing is really holding me back, except for fear. I'm a hard workin person, its just that, this is such a big thing. My family isn't gonna be happy to hear about it. But other than that, I just have to make up my mind, finish school, then leave. I think i'm just anxious. I wanna go, but at the same time, I'm scared. But I don't wanna stay hear. Nothing wrong with America, nothing out of the ordinary at least. But I just wanna be there, thats all. Yeah, i'm scared.

The one thing thats probably bothering me the most. Um, are African American people welcome over there. I don't really hear too much about it. Never see it in movies. Just would like to know.

I understand you anxiety of going to another country. You have to adapt to a completely different enviroment. It's okay to be a little nervous, but my advice for you would to think of this as an adventure. Think of the new things you'll see. That's my advice. And I wouldn't worry too much about being accepted as an African American, I'm sure you'll be able to make friends. Just be yourself

a very good questions...and one that i do not have the answer to...i would imagine so...i'd be very troubled if the answer was no!

however, sometimes following your heart is far more difficult than i made it sound...if everyone followed there heart i couldn't tell you if the world would be a better or worse place...there have been many times when my heart said "KILL THEM" but my head stopped me...that's what seperates us from animals...concious thought and a concept of right or wrong.

only you need to decide to go not everyone else, I think I would liek to take a stab at living in japan but I am not ready for that yet.

Cool, I like that explanation. Thanks alot, really. I honestly don't feel so, ....mmm, worried. You, its just that, here in the states, even in TV and Sports and places, alot of black people act weird and "ghetto". Don't get me wrong, but alot of Asian nationalities here in America don't like black people for that reason. Most think they steal, are rude and inconsiderate, I just hope that Japanese people don't think that way. Dare I say it, i feel embarrased sometimes going to my friends' houses knowing what there parents think and how they feel about me. I hope it won't be like that in Japan. I don't wanna be looked down on because of race. -_-'

i would hate to think that any country would look down upon someone because of race...but i would be living in a dream world if i thought that this didn't happen. i don't think the world's racism issues will be solved in this forum...or anywhere if i am honest, it is a sad fact of society.
my advice to you megafool is to take a couple of trips to japan (if finances allow) to gain a 'hands on' understanding of culture and more importantly...to see how you feel. there is only so much you can predict or read about or try to understand...i would imagine experiening it first hand would be a great benefit, especially before you commit to relocating!

Are you planning to go to Japan to live? For how long? Have you ever been to Japan before at all?

Before you make a firm commitment, why not take a trip over there just to test the waters. There are inexpensive places you can stay at. Maybe meet some of the Forum members who are living over there. Check out what it is. If it feels like it's where you want to be, then you'll be able to make the decision with more confidence.

Another advice. If you do go to stay, have a clear goal in mind about what you want to accomplish while you're in Japan. Why would you want to go to Waseda to study education? Where and what do you plan to teach eventually? With a BA degree, most any American could teach in Japan would be English. To teach any other academic subject (at an university), you would most likely need an advanced degree but not necessarily have taken courses in education per se. Lastly, Waseda is expensive.

good point, but... its often your brain that makes you want to kill as well though. if you think about a little thing that annoyed you for ages n ages, it will snowball into utter rage... ur heart doesn't do that!

I'm also curious why he wants to pursue an education degree at Waseda. Not being Japanese, he would be legally precluded from working in Japanese public schools. And the odds of getting hired even if the legal barrier weren't present are dismal to boot.

if you present yourself far away from this stereotype, i personally cannot see why there would be a problem. if you present yourself as a buisness man (if thats the type of work your going for) why would people think any different - a smart looking man is a smart looking man regardless of colour, ne?

my 2 cents on the topic anyway...

When talking about unreasonable behavior, there isn't much point in asking about reasons for it. Surely you have encountered unreasonable people before in your life, haven't you?

Go for it. When I was 22 A friend and I decided to go around the US and Canada. We just went. Got on a standby at Heathrow and 7 hours later we're in New York. Didn't plan it. I think if we did, or discussed it we would have never have done it. Starting to get to settled now to do daft things like that.
