Japan's ruling bloc, a coalition between the LDP and Komeito, is likely to grab over 60 of the 125 contested seats, thus retaining a majority in the 248-member upper house (House of Councillors). According to several TV commentators the "Abe effect" did not play any significant role in the outcome, only very few voters seem to have changed their vote in the light of the former PM's assassination last Friday.

The ruling Liberal Democratic Party will likely win at least 60 seats, up from the 55 it held that were contested in the July 10 Upper House election, an Asahi Shimbun exit poll showed. Junior coalition partner Komeito was also projected to hold on to the 14 seats it held. Together, the parties will easily surpass the 63 seats that represent a majority of contested seats in the chamber. In total, 125 seats are up for grabs. Combined with uncontested seats, the ruling coalition will maintain its majority in the Upper House, reaching the pre-election goal set by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. The main opposition Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan seemed unlikely to hold on to the 23 contested seats it held, according to the exit poll.

The LDP scored a big victory grabbing 63 seats which secured them 76 seats with their coalition partner Komeito, comfortably retaining a majority in the 248-member upper chamber of parliament. Crossing the 166-seat threshold (two-thirds majority) needed for constitutional revision means that the Kishida administration has enough seats for a first-ever revision of the 1947 Constitution, one of Abe's declared goals.

The Constitutional Democratic Party, Japan's main opposition party, won 17 seats but lost six of the contested seats it held before the election. The opposition Japan Innovation Party, which advocates constitutional reform, won 12 seats, adding six to its total in the chamber.
