Genealogy in Japan

Hello-

I was wondering if anybody would have any tips on how to do genealogy research in Japan? I have already obtained most of my ancestor's josekis back to around 1893, but would especially like information on genealogical societies. Thanks!

Your next step would be to hire a private detective who searches the Buddhism temple in which your ancestor had been registered throughout the Edo period.
A private ditective site says that it is a bit hard to get the info from the temple with the present privacy protection policy, even if your ancestor was registed there.

Hmm thats harsh, i mean what ulterior motive could you have in this case? This simply looks like an annoying obstacle in front of folklorists and such people. The privacy police in power at the moment that is.

People could be going back and looking for evidence of being descended from the burakumin class or related to some infamous person and intend to use any information found to forestall a marriage, deny employment, etc.

And is your signature within JREF guidelines? It seems a bit over the top to me.

Hello,

That private detective route seems a bit much for me. I'll send out a few letters to my ancestor's buddhist temples and see what I get back. I have heard that the kosekis were very, very hard to get, but it seemed like they had no problem releasing them to me this year.
