Actually it's the other way around. Hyde is beautiful, but Gackt is perfect.

The colors of the rings seem a bit off. Or is that just the lighting?

I like them both, but I prefer Gackt... 'cause he can do a lot of things, he's funny, he has a very beautiful voice (it makes me melt every time I hear it!!!) and he's a very handsome man ^^
 
I voted for HYDE.

Gackt is doubtless talented, but he's too robotic. There's never a spontaneous moment with him; everything seems calculated or contrived. He's also blatantly narcissistic, which is rather obnoxious and turn off-y.

Voice-wise, Gackt is good. It's not anything that'll pull at my heartstrings, make me shed a tear or whatever. His incessant vibrato is rather annoying, too; he needs to learn how to control it. If it's deliberate, then...I really can't say anything, except: WHY?

(One word: Vanilla. *shudders*)

I do give Gackt props for his music, though. It's pretty good. A talented musician, I can't dispute.

hyde appeals to me more because he comes across as the genuine article: what you see is essentially what you get, but with that underlying aura of mystery that makes him so attractive.

Voice-wise, I share the same sentiment as everyone else: there's more raw talent. It's wild, un-harnessed...beautiful. If you listen to songs like "hitomi no jounin", "Anemone", "As if in a dream", "finale", "ibara no namida", "hoshizora", "yokan", anything off ROENTGEN, you'll understand where I'm coming from. Overall, the proper adjective to describe his voice would be "haunting". And yes, I, Mari, The Ice Queen, have shed a tear or two listening to him sing.

Also, some of my favorite L'Arc songs ("ibara no namida", "LORELEY", "Sell My Soul", etc.) are ones hyde composed, so he definitely commands my respect in regards to his musicianship.


And now, ladies and gentlemen, the final judgment: LOOKS.


HYDE > Gackt.

I'm more for organic beauty than heavily caked-up glamour.

Let me just get this across: Gackt is good-looking, his features are scarily symmetrical (questionably symmetrical?), I just don't find him attractive. I guess it's just a matter of tastes.
 
You do realize there're just as many Hyde pics with pounds of make up, right? I just didn't bother to post them. Gackt can be ethereal and child like, and Hyde can also be a "tranny gangster".

I suppose it's taste. But you do realize (I guess you don't) Gackt's features are hardly perfect? e.g. his nose bridge is crooked and his eyes are kinda small. I'm not sure what you mean by scarily symmetrical, since EVERYONE is scarily symmetrical with an airbrushing team. But they're all fairly symmetrical, since that's one of the first requirements for beauty.

EDIT: Scroll to the top of this page to see a Hyde who isn't that ethereal and child like. He doesn't look as hot being a tranny gangster either.
 

My friend did something with photoshop where she took one side of Gackt's face, duplicated it, flipped it over and then put the two pieces together. The end result: there was virtually no difference to the original photo. I hold my position.

(You can also have small eyes and still have near-symmetric features. I don't think big eyes are a prerequisite or anything.)

The main difference between hyde and Gackt (looks-wise) is hyde makes a pretty woman; Gackt just succeeds in looking like a poser, which is essentially one of my main issues with him.

First and foremost, they are musicians, so let's ease up on the OMGWHOZHOTTER!11!? debate. Let's just agree to disagree. ^ ~

He's perfect because he has imperfections. That's what I meant and what I said in some other thread, I think.

But whatever. Airbrushing and lighting make him symmetrical, as I said. The small eyes thing wasn't about his symmetry, it was about his imperfections.

Gackt doesn't WANT to look like a pretty woman. And Hyde hasn't wanted to look like a pretty woman for, what, years now? If you dislike Gackt because he doesn't look like a woman, well, you have some issues. ^^

But whatever. I'll end here.
 
i'd choose hyde over Gackt any day!!

It doesn't matter whether either one wants to look like a woman or not; it's simply a matter of looking like one despite efforts for or against it. Gackt just comes across as someone who tries too hard and winds up making a spectacle of himself (above).

I already stated the reasons why I don't like Gackt as much as hyde (and I never said I don't like Gackt, only that there are things about him that irk me -- his pretentiousness, for one). And please, don't turn this discussion into my having issues for supposedly having an aversion towards men who don't look like women. That was a personal attack and uncalled for.

I don't think Gackt looks like, or tries to look like, a woman exactly I just think he can be very effeminate at times. Also, the pic you used is an old one so it really holds no baring on Gackt's present image. But even in Malice Mizer when do you ever see him in a dress etc? He usually wore period pieces made for men (and compared to the other members, I believe he wore the least makeup as well).

Granted men's clothes from the period he chose weren't all that terribly "masculine" but I don't believe he was trying to look like/be a woman.

There's a huge difference between being effeminate (even extremely so) and then actually looking like a woman. And frankly every time Gackt actually DOES try to appear as a woman, in my opinion, it always end up going horribly wrong. *remembers the Geisha photoshoot*shivers*

I don't think he's trying to appear as a woman. I think he's just a beautiful man who doesn't conform to traditional definitions of "masculinity." I don't see how you can say he tries too hard to be a woman, especially recently.
 
I voted for Hyde, But only because I assumed everyone would vote for Gackt and I like helping the underdog. Boy was I wrong.

Anyways If I could redo my vote I'd vote for both of them, they both have great voices.
 
Well, hyde is my antidrug has already said about all I wanted to say. It's not Gackt's fault he's beautiful and effeminate. And god, did he ever run around in dresses like Hyde? How can you say he tries too hard next to Mana?

And I'm only curious: going by their faces alone, why do you think Hyde is prettier than Gackt? What about Hyde's face makes it better in your opinion?

(Gackt is getting no love in this forum. Poor guy.)
 
I don't think I have heard any Hydes music. I have got Gackts Diabolos album and he has a fair voice. BTW can you recommend any other of his albums?:?
I've seen Moonchild, though, and Hyde seems the better actor. More natural, so it is difficult to choose. Maybe you should have put a third choice, Both as Good as each other, for us wimps who can't decide
 
A lot of Jrockers deliberately try to look effeminate or "pretty", no matter what you might say to dispute that (because Japanese pop culture eats up cream puffs; that's just the way it is), Gackt and hyde not excluded, even to this day; some just pull it off better than others. To me, when Gackt poses, period, he just comes across as affectatious; a perpetual caricature of himself. Honestly, sometimes he looks constipated to me. The beef I have with Gackt is that he's plastic (I'm not just talking about any surgery he might have had). That being the case, I do not find Gackt "beautiful". For me to find someone beautiful, aside from physical attractiveness, that person has to exude a sort of innate, natural allure; an openness, so to speak. To me, Gackt lacks that -- perhaps his perfectionist tendencies inhibit him, in this sense. That's just what it boils down to, so grilling me isn't going to make me change my opinion.

Let me just set the record straight before this gets any messier: Gackt is a good-looking man, he's just not the kind of good-looking that I'm attracted to.

And we're not talking about Mana. Just Gackt, himself.

I also never said hyde doesn't try to look like a woman. Back in the indies, hyde very much looked like and sometimes acted like one (take "try" out of the equation). The only difference is, that androgyny -- in looks and attitude -- didn't come across to me as synthetic; it was natural. These days, though, he's more in touch with his masculine side, like Gackt.

Sum: hyde = natural; Gackt = plastic

So, what about hyde's face?

From an artist's point of view, his face is a very good subject. The angles are soft, refined, delicate. It's also got a nice long, oval shape and it's expressive, so allows for a bit of creativity on the artist's part. Mostly, though, it's his eyes. They're very intense; captivating; occasionally unnerving. When his face is stoic, his eyes are always eloquent. They hint at a deep passion. When they're not undressing you or burning a hole through your brain or sucking out your soul, they're quietly pleading or sparkling (literally) with a sort of childlike innocence that's very disarming.

Ethereal; enigmatic; eloquent; beautiful...

...an effort to capture those qualities.

"Disarming" is a good word for Hyde's eyes.

Personally, I don't think Gackt's plastic in that way all the time (or as I like to put it "a robot") but the key words here are "all the time." I will be the first to admit he can be a bit contrived when performing but not to the extent you describe. He has a certain elegance about him, but that self same elegance can lead to a certain level of stoicism and that robotic feel he sometimes exudes. He's very controlled but I don't believe he's a caricature of himself, rather I think his public image is like a reflection in a mirror of himself. The same as the real thing just backwards and somehow colder, more stale. I don't think it's that he's trying too hard to be something but rather he's trying too hard NOT to be something, to NOT show a side of himself. I don't know what that side is but I wish he would let it out.

Where Hyde is disarming Gackt is intriguing. I want to know what lies behind the mask.
