Fundoshi

I can't believe nobody else here has tried on a fundoshi. I wore one at the autumn festival at my local shrine 2 years ago. Its actually not as uncomfortable as it looks.

All the men from my neighborhood had to gather (maybe 700 or 800 guys I guess) to carry around Mikoshi on our backs and hoist them high into the air every once in a while. Only about 10% of the guys wore Fundoshi, everyone else wore shorts (which is what I wore every other year).

I got a laugh out of that guy telling foreigners not to wear fundoshi. Maybe he formed that opinion after seeing my hairy butt sticking out of the thing.

Wow Senseiman, You've got some Kahunas wearing those out in public, because I could never do something like that. I will just stick to the Jinbei when it comes to festivals, because those are comfortable and less exposing.
Geta are pretty comfortable as well once you get used to them, but it was a real test for me when I had to climb Osaka's Castle with them on. I thought for sure I was going to fall down the stairs, but I managed to complete the task successfully. I'm a boxer man, and I tend to avoid the speedos, and the male thongs. The Fundoshi type of occasion is one where Sisqo's words of "Let me see that thong," won't be popping into my head.

i used a fundoushi this past summer. it is most like wearing a pair of tighty whities with the back end bunched up in your crack.

Wearing a Fundoshi was not at all embarassing. The embarassing part was putting it on. There is a special method and I don't know how to tie it so I had to go to my neighbor's house where all the guys who were going to wear fundoshi were getting dressed. You can't do it by yourself, so you need someone to help fold it and tie it up. As this involves getting naked from the waste down, I had sort of figured he would have had some sort of private space set up out of public view, but nope. When I entered his house there was one of my other neighbor's standing stark naked in the middle of the living room, with everybody's wife and kids sitting around chatting and acting as if nothing out of the ordinary like, say, a naked guy standing right next to them was going on.

So when it came to be my turn I was EXTREMELY nervous. "OK, no big deal, everybody else is doing it, all you have to do is be naked in front of your neighbor's wives and kids for a few seconds." I kept thinking to myself. No problem. So I stood in the middle of the room and took it all off. Only at that EXACT moment my nieghbor - the guy who was in charge of tying everyone's Fundoshi - got a call on his Keitai. So I had to stand completely naked there for a couple of minutes trying to act all casual like this was something I do all the time and I wasn't at all embarassed or anything. It raised a few questions for me. Where to put my hands? Should I fold my arms across my chest or just let them hang loose? I tried folding them, but I thought that made me look like I was impatient so I let them hang loose. But that didn't feel right either. I came to the conclusion that the best place to keep your hands when you are standing naked in front of your neighbor's wives and kids is in your pockets, which is unfortunately impossible. The wives kept chatting and the kids kept playing all the while though, which kind of made me relax and eventually I decided to rest my hands on my hips, but not in too provocative a manner.

Eventually my nieghbor got off the damned Keitai and tied my Fundoshi on for my, which was quite a releif. They really ought to invent some kind of 'clip-on' Fundoshi for people like me so we can avoid all the public nudity.

I hate the fundoshi, I thought it was one of the most uncomfortable pieces of clothing I had to wear when I wore it in the summer festival. I'll never join that festival again!!
