Last Thursday, the city of Fujisawa in Kanagawa Prefecture announced that it had welcomed around 20.4 million tourists in 2022, with tourism-related spending reaching approximately 113.8 billion yen—both all-time highs for the city. According to officials, the number of visitors rose by 4% compared to the previous year's figure of 19.6 million.

Popular spots such as Enoshima's Samuel Cocking Garden, which is free to enter during the day, and the naturally formed Enoshima Iwaya caves attracted significant foot traffic. The city attributes the rise in tourism not only to a steady stream of international visitors but also to favourable weather, which boosted beach tourism and group bus tours.
Rising prices were seen as a key factor behind the record-breaking tourism spending. Mayor Tsuneo Suzuki expressed satisfaction that the city had finally surpassed the 20 million visitor milestone, but also addressed growing concerns about overtourism in the popular Enoshima area. He noted that the city would take steps to promote more balanced tourism by encouraging visitors to explore other parts of Fujisawa as well.
Also on Thursday, neighbouring Kamakura reported a strong recovery in tourism, with around 15.94 million visitors over the past year—an increase of roughly 29% compared to the previous year.
