Yup, unlike Mandarin Chinese. We take that in school, and whilst it helps a lot with my ability to learn and write kanji, it does get a bit confusing at times. (When the same character means two different things, for example.)
Japanese is much easier to pronounce than Chinese, though, since it lacks the tones.
