I started with the "Japanese For Busy People" series combined with tutors, Japanese children's books, talking with friends -- basically the whole gamet of approaches. To repeat, which texts have you already started working through on your own ? The chatroom experience may have been a good reality check on how you're going to need to get to where you want to be. A place I've never even dared approach at my level....

And please stop using the word 'fluency' in describing my abilities. It's intermediate and I can understand more than I can produce but I still have
a very long way to go. And after passing JLPT 2 next year I may give it all up out of sheer sweat and nervous exhaustion.(j/k)
I think you're going the right way. A lot of people (esp. young people) who encounter Japanese used in anime, movies, etc., find the language different from what is taught in textbooks and throw away the standard form, placing priority on communication with people in their own generation. That's understandable, but it makes things tremendously difficult when it's time for them to use polite Japanese as adults, especially when talking in formal and business situations.Of course I'm aware most of what I wrote is probably very kudoi and strained. Since I'm only up to the point of getting most of my practice from reading Japanese newspapers and listening to news broadcasts. The naturalness aspect will hopefully come in due time with the proper exposure -- although the kind of friends I seem to attract still prefer a more formal style.
