I bought a DVD player for using in Japan but I want to know if other region 2 DVDs will work on it, im thinking of asking my brother to bring some from Ireland when he visits. Theyre region 2 aswell but PAL as opposed to NTSC. Will I have any trouble playing them in Japan? In Ireland I could play NTSC DVDs okay, but im not sure about the other way around.
 
Sorry- won't work unless you buy a special multi-region television (here's just one of many places you could buy one http://www.koyo-world.com/tv.htm). A DVD player that plays PAL discs is NOT sufficient, though of course you will need one - but unless your player is more than five years old that shouldn't be a problem.

You could transfer the DVDs to NTSC format. You need a DVD-Burner, a fairly powerful computer, some special software and patience. I'm in the process of converting some BBC Children's TV shows from PAL format to NTSC. I offered to help out a friend too tight to invest in a multi-system television - it's taking quite some time to convert them and then re-author the files so a non-techie can navigate the DVDs.

Alternatively, just watch them on your computer or use the video-out function (if you have one) on your VGA card or notebook.
 
Hmm, my UK DVDs work fine when played on my JP Xbox on a JP TV. The TV is just a regular one as far as I know, didn't choose it specially or anything. Maybe it depends on the player / TV combination.

Well if they are genuine PAL format DVDs then I suspect then you must have an X-Box with an built-in video converter - I haven't heard of that before, but stand-alone DVD players with such a feature do exist and this is also a solution for the original poster - here's a link:

Best to buy a multi-region player that also plays avi files from all those ilegal downloads. You can get it for under 10,000yen
 
So it wont work? Argh! Dont have the money to buy another player, man. The one I had was 5000 and that was expensive for me. I Only get 30,000 a month.
 
Oh yeah!

I just got a DVD sent over from Ireland and it works perfectly. My TV is just a standard one, nothing special and my DVD player is the cheapest one i could find at 5000 yen so I dont know what you`re talking about mr.sumo.snr.
Gonna get my brother to bring me over my Father Ted and Transformers season 1 DVDs.
 
All you need is a multi-region DVD with a PAL/NTSC convertor..that's all. These player will play any disc on any TV format anywhere even in Japan. Here are a few models that I would suggest looking into...

There are cheapier models that do as good a job as theses. If in Japan you maybe by able to find Malata which is a great brand at a cheapier price. Just make sure the player has a NTSC/PAL coverter in it, which most do. In fact on I'd suggest is their newest model with an added divx/mpeg4 player attached with it..

You have obviously discovered THE cheapest available DVD player sold in Japan that comes with a PAL/NTSC signal-out converter. Would you be so kind as to post the exact model details, I definitely want to purchase one.

On the off chance that your television is masquerading as a multi-system device could you also post its details too.
 

Credit where credit is due - 'flash' has stumbled across quite a bargain here - at least for the UKlanders and Icelanders (sic) amongst us. This model - AVOX ADS200S - has been available next to the checkout at my local Tsutaya (DVD rental store) for a fair few months now selling for about 4000 yen and I never really gave it much thought since it definitely didn't play avi files, which is the feature I wanted in my next DVD player purchase.

So anyway I just popped out and picked one up and YES indeed it does output PAL format DVDs (I have a motley collection of BBC DVDs) to a regular Japanese NTSC television with no noticeable picture loss.

An excellent find this. Worthy of inclusion in a FAQ.
 
Wow, so I just got lucky with it? I knew being cheap would pay off some day!
If only I could stop buying Pepsi Twist for those little Mario bottle tops!
 
looks good... weight? looks like it's only sold in japan... hmm
 
last week tsutaya shibuya had some of them on every floor i think, so it should be easily available from within the country. gl
