"A study which showed that rats fed on artificial sweetener still put on weight has baffled researchers.
Scientists from Purdue University in the US now believe that a sweet taste followed by no calories may make the body crave extra food.
Their research, published in the journal Behavioral Neuroscience, found that rats fed sugar subsequently had lower appetites.
The researchers wrote in the journal: "The data clearly indicate that consuming a food sweetened with no-calorie saccharin can lead to greater body-weight gain and adiposity than would consuming the same food sweetened with higher calorie sugar";

Ah i never believed in all of these diet foods and programs anyway, plus the diet food equivalents always don't taste as good as the original non-diet products they copy.
Ah it pisses me off- everyone always seems to be making excuses for the reason why they or other people are fat.
One day its the "fat gene" excuse, the next its the "Big bones" excuse etc. "Fat gene"- yeah right, more like the reason why someone is fat and their mum is fat and their bro is fat and their dad is fat etc is because they're all been eating the same over-sized portions of rubbish at the dinner table, and "Big bones"? Yeah, thats a really big belly bone and a big arse bone you have there! Etc.
... .... ....
No, i think we all need to face up to the gluttony problems we have in our western societies. There's no mystery to why so many people are getting fat now days, its simply a case of that;
a. Fattening foods like animals products are a lot cheaper/affordable now days- its now not uncommon to see people who eat meats like sausages and bacon everyday of the week now days, while in the past a hundred or so years ago meat was a special treat (its where the Sunday Roast thing came from, meat was expensive in the past and a lot of people could only afford to eat it once a week, so they ate on the sacred Sunday of rest as a special treat etc).
In fact, throughout most of our civilization and evolution, we haven't lived off a very high fat/sugar/calorie diet that contained a lot of animal products- in the past, people didn't used to get enough animal products in their diets, now days though we face the opposite problem with too many people getting too many animal products in their diets etc.
b. We're leading less and less physically active lifestyles, and our preferences of entertainment are becoming more and more sit down types of entertainment etc.
Its unbelievable how lazy some people can be now days- there's a woman i used to know of who drives her car from her house to the village shop, but the village shop is only a safe 2minute walk from her house! BTW she's very fat (no wonder why though).
c. We're losing the skills of cooking- i find it crazy how few people know how to cook now days, its just nuts that some people don't know how to cook things like pasta or make an omelet etc. And the proof is in the supermarket- i see pre-made meals like mashed potato or sausages in gravy; these things are unbelievably easy and quick to cook from scratch!
The more we rely on pre-made foods, the more difficult it becomes to monitor what goes into ones diet. If you were making a meal, would you put hydrogenated vegetable fats or E122 in it? I think not.
I think cooking is a very basic and highly important skill to have, and i think cooking classes should become mandatory in all schools- not only do i think it will help people eat healthier diets and improve their knowledge in general, but i think it will also help fight obesity problems in our societies too.
Anyhoo...A good balanced diet which contains lots of fruit and veg (and by veg and fruit i don't mean deep fried chips and battered pineapple fritters) and is eaten in good sized portions which aren't too large, and a lifestyle that is daily physically very active, is all that is needed to maintain a good bodyweight. You don't need all of these fad diets, these tasteless low fat food substitutes, the latest "super food" craze etc to loose weight and maintain a good bodyweight. Just deal with the fact that you're overweight and be honest and truthful to yourself and stop making excuses for your weight, and just find happiness in your life and just get out there and start eating properly and healthily and do the right exercise in the advisable amounts etc and IMHO, you'll loose weight for sure
.
I appologise if i ranted a little, but its a topic that gets me heated up
.
