Device Manager Blank

Anyone experience this problem:

I tried using my seperate camera and microphone last week on my PC and discovered it did not work when two months ago it was working fine. I tried reinstalling the software, but still they didn't work.

I checked my Device Manager and discovered that it was completely blank listing no devices whatsoever. However, everything like my DVD player, CD player, keyboard, wireless mouse, USB ports, etc. works fine. I just can't make any changes to them, nor can I load new hardware.

I checked with Microsoft on line and they say it's due to a previous Security download problem and that there is a hotfix for it. (So far my laptop does not show this problem and my device manager shows everything.)

I downloaded the hotfix, but am unsure as to whether to install it or not because they do not guarantee it and if it further messes up my computer that they (Microsoft) are not responsible for it.

If anyone knows about this problem or has experienced it I would appreciate hearing your feedback.

What's your Windows version, by the way? I haven't faced that problem as far as I remember, neither on XP SP2 nor on Windows 7 (Beta and RC). Backup your data and uninstall that update to see if it's really the source of your issue. If it is, try reinstall it and then install the hotfix to see what happens.

I got it up and running thanks to a fix from microsoft and Symantec. It seems that there is a conflict between XP service pack3 and Symantec Antivirus software which renders the device manager blank. If you have Symantec software it is recommended that you disable it before downloading service pack3 or any other software from microsoft for that matter. I wish they would have mentioned that as it would've saved me a headache looking for a solution.
