Currency switch?

So, when will the new bills (10000 yen?) be released? I'd vaguely heard about it being some time this year, but the Irish banks are clueless.

I'd like to exchange the old bills I have for new before they go out of date, so the latest update would be good to hear.

I found this article today saying that the notes are delayed about four months. You should look for them around November.

TOKYO 窶 A woman will be featured on a Japanese banknote for the first time when the Finance Ministry introduces new 10,000 yen, 5,000 yen and 1,000 yen bills in November, four months later than originally scheduled, ministry officials said Tuesday.

The new banknotes were originally scheduled to go into circulation in July but the release was postponed due to a delay in designing a portrait of Meiji-era novelist Ichiyo Higuchi (1872-1896) for the 5,000 yen bill. Nekosasori - I think they are phasing things in. I can understand the collectors urge, but your old 10,000's should still be legal tender for a few years at least.

All of the old Japanese banknotes issued since the end of World War II are still valid and redeemable at the Bank of Japan. That is my understanding.

The only catch is that you have to be present at the counter at the Bank of Japan or appoint someone to be your agent to exchange the old notes there.

That is my problem right now because I have a tidy amount of old Japanese banknotes that I would like to exchange. But I could not because I am not in Japan or know anyone in Japan who could assist me in exchanging them.

If you have any good suggestion or helpful advice, it would be greatly appreciated!

Since you are based in Ireland, I think you should exchange your Japanese banknotes at the banks for euros. Otherwise, they will not exchange "old" banknotes for you because they are not the Bank of Japan.

Or you can always hold onto your Japanese notes until you return to Japan. Then, you can go to the Bank of Japan to exchange them.
