Everyones bound to forget something every once in a while. Especially the te-forms, I'm always wondering which one to use "te" or "tte".

For ru verbs: (I.E any verb that ends with "ru" like "taberu") drop the "ru" add "te

miru - mite

It gets complicated after that: Verbs that end in mu, nu, and bu get turned into "nde"


"u" Verbs: The u is dropped and you add "tte".

kau - katte

For the rest:
(anything that doesn't end in ru, nu, mu, or bu and isn't an irregular verb like suru)
The "u" sound gets turned into it's corresponding "i" sound and then you add te.


In the case of "u" verbs that end in "ku" the k is dropped.


There's other stuff but I can't remember it all off the top of my head. Man I hope I got all this stuff right. :?

Looks to me like not only was the "k" left out, "I " was added as well as the lend U was replaced with "te" form.


YOu know, it baffles me I can't even make simple sentences like "I like to read."

Apparently, you have to NORMALIZE a stupid verb (make it into a noun) just to say this simpel setence! Now, if you have a verb "to read" then if you made it into a noun, what the heck would it be? A noun is a person place or thing, a verb is an action. So, if you normalized it, would it turn into a person, a thing, or a place? LOL

Here's an example

Yomu is the plain form of (to read)
Yomimasu is the polite
Yomimasen (to not read) Oops, not didn't
Yomimashtia (didn't read, I think)

Anyway.

You take "yomu" and add "no" to it and then it goes like this
Yomuno ga suki.

I like to read.

Confusing, isn't it? Worse, I never found this in ANY TEXTBOOK.

Heh, and I don't think you ever will. At least not unless you buy harder books. My auntie off-handedly taught me that one day, She's a native speaker.

The noun is merely the subject or object of another verb. So when you say in english "I like to read" read becomes the object of the verb "like". That means that "read' is the thing you "verb" or "like".

I'm going to use nomu for my example:

Nomimasu - polite present form - "drink"
Nomimasen - polite negative in present tense - "not drink"
Nomimashita - polite past tense - "drunk"
Nomimasen deshita - polite negative past tense - "not drunk"

I understand this but it is beyond my ability to explain. And it's really something that I think you should just file away in your mind for later. Don't worry about it for now. There's another way prase that, it involves "koto". But once again I'm not going to attempt explaining it. It's really weird.

su becomes "shi" or "si"
tu becomes chi
ku becomes ki

thats what I meant by "The 'u' sound gets turned into it's corresponding 'i' ".

After you change "ku" to "ki" you'll have hiki. Then you drop the k from the 'ki' in 'hiki' and you get "hi_i". Then add te,

"hi_ite"
