Matsushima Bay is one beautiful area of Japan. The bay itself was spared catastrophic tsunami damage thanks to the tiny islands that dot the bay. A 20 min. commuter train ride from Sendai will get you there.

Tourism is slowly recovering in the area, but they could use your patronage.

I was there a few years ago and it did look pretty neat but unfortunatly it was kind of a cold, drizzly, crappy day out and you couldn't see a whole lot. I really would like to go back and see it in better weather. I'm glad to hear the bay was spared, I was wondering about that.

I totally agree. I went there two Sundays ago after visiting my wife's cousin's home in nearby--and totally devastated--Yuriage. Yuriage is on the coast just north of the Sendai Airport and the most densely populated area was completely wiped out. By strong contrast, Matsushima went nearly unscathed. Tourists crowded the sidewalks, shops were open, boats were running sightseeing cruises, the weather was fantastic and the scenery spectacular. The famous poet Basho called Matsushima one of the two most beautiful places in Japan. In my book, it still is.
