Hello,

Does anyone know how much Chinese characters remained equall in spite of the parallel waves of simplifications carried out by both countries?

As a native speaker of one of the two languages in question and a learner of the other, I still completely fail to see the significance of your question or am I missing something here?. Whatever the answer might be, it would purely be a result of coincidence.

Excuse me for almost having raped the English language. I just wanted to know an aproximation about the number of the official Chinese characters (simplified or not) that are equal in both People's Republic of China and Japan. I also take the opportunity to ask the same question but in regard to the amount of the most frequently used Chinese characters shared by both countries.
 

If you completely fail to see the significance of the question then it only shows that you don't have a sysmatic way of learning both kanji and hanzi.

Hi Azomyr

You have asked a very good question, and probably the most important one if you want to learn both Japanese and PRC Chinese characters.

The following information are all from my personal effort as one of my goal is to pass Kanken 2.

There are 2136 Joyo kanji, which is the Kanken 2 level, out of the 2136, there are total of about 860 kanjis that are different from the PRC after simplification/modification by both nations.

This number include all the discrepancies including Wasei Kanji, and stroke difference,so if you consider kanjis like 反, 戸, 所 etc to be the same in both Japan and PRC, then the number will be smaller.
 

Thank you very much, I'm thinking about restarting my long ago abandoned study of Mandarin Chinese, so this can be very helpful.
 
I have to admit that I like both Japanese and Chinese but feel I need 2 lifetimes to learn even the basic language, it seems difficult.
 
There's a lot of overlap between the character sets, and many characters that share the same origin that have changed differently in each language. This is especially evident in simplified Chinese... but as you study and get more comfortable with the characters, you'll more easily see the patterns and begin to create those connections in your brain so that when you see something like 见 and 見 you'll recognize them as the same character.
 
China, Japan & S Korea had a meeting few years ago and the results were approximately 1000 commonly used characters used between the 3 countries.

You made it sound like the governments of the three countries.
