A funeral company in Futtsu, Chiba Prefecture that has been in business for over 120 years began offering an experience this September to help visitors reflect on their ultimate fate:

The unique "coffin cafe" (入棺カフェ) has opened on the premises of a company in Japan. It features three intricately designed coffins created by the renowned maker Grave Tokyo. Participants can spend as much time inside the coffins as they wish and capture photos of their experience. The concept was born from a desire to repurpose the coffins and stimulate local economic growth. However, Kiyotaka Hirano, the 48-year-old president of the company, had a deeper purpose in mind. Through his work, he has interacted with individuals who have lost loved ones to suicide and felt a profound sense of helplessness. Hirano explained, "While we encourage people to take photos and enjoy a lively experience, we also hope those feeling down or have reached a crossroads in their lives will consider entering the coffins. Emerging from them symbolizes rebirth and a fresh start. We want people to feel empowered to begin anew."

The president also explained his hope that visitors may get some time to think about their own death, a topic often overlooked as a taboo. "People may think about it when they are told they have a limited time to live, but it is hard to think about death in everyday life. In the pitch-black darkness of the coffin, one can think about their remaining life and the final days of loved ones," Hirano commented. Some of the comments in response to articles on the cafe included, "That's disrespectful," and "That's a bad omen," but to such critics, Hirano responded that "this is the result of thinking about what we could do as a funeral company."

Reservations are necessary for this unique experience, which costs 2,200 yen (approximately $14.50) per person, including tax. The company received around 20 bookings in early October, with many inquiries from younger demographics.
