Buying roundtrip ticket for one way travel - is it illegal?

Hi all.
As many of you may already know, one-way ticket is much more expensive than round trip. I wish to go back home one-way from Japan to US.

So I am thinking of buying a round trip ticket and just ditching the return ticket.
But I am worried about any trouble I might get into.
First of all, is there anything illegal in this?
If not, any consequences?
Will airlines or travel agencies fine me, put me on their black lists, or get me into any sort of trouble?

Please share what you know!

Buying a plane ticket is not a contract that in any way binds the person purchasing it to use it.

Granted, some airlines MAY have things in place where they can charge you if you don't use the second part, but I've never heard of anyone getting in trouble for it (I've done it myself several times).

Usually, airlines oversell their flights with the expectation that some people will not show up to the flight, and they will profit on the extra.

airlines could care less what you did with your second ticket. it's already paid for, so they got their money. if you don't show up, it's not their problem.

I'm a professional travel agent and I assure you that there's nothing illegal about it.
Anyway, Airlines (and travel agencies) would like to know it beforehand, so that they could sell the current vacant seat or to hand over it to overbooking-affected travelers.
